MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) No, Senator Panfilo Lacson is not a candidate for any elective position in the coming May polls.
But his photos scattered along Roxas Boulevard in Manila may easily be mistaken as campaign materials if one fails to notice the words "Wanted" above and "double murder case" below them.
Lacson's photos were put up on Tuesday by members of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), which has been calling the authorities to step up manhunt operations against the senator.
"The arrest of Senator Lacson should be made swiftly and soon. I do not believe that politics have anything to do with this; it is simply justice catching up with him at last," said VACC founding chair and president Dante Jimenez.
Jimenez said they would scatter Lacson's "wanted photos" around Metro Manila and eventually, across the country.
"Instead of putting up campaign materials of a certain candidate, we will display his pictures," he added.
The VACC also raised concern over the possibility of Lacson being accorded special treatment in view of reports that a fully furnished air-conditioned detention cell has been awaiting him at the National Bureau of Investigation.
"If so, that mocks the Constitutional tenet of equality of justice for all. We are appalled at the idea of a separate justice for the mighty and for the powerless. Sen. Lacson should be treated under detention like any other citizen accused of murder," Jimenez stressed.
Likewise, the anti-crime and corruption watchdog expressed dismay over the statements allegedly made earlier by Sen. Gregorio Honasan urging his mistah Lacson to use his training as a former military officer by "mastering the art of disguise" apparently to elude arrest.
These pronouncements, the VACC said, were callous and unbecoming for a senator. "It smacks of mocking arrogance and irreverence to our judicial system," it said.
Meanwhile, in a letter read by his lawyer Demetrio Custodio, Carina Dacer, one of the daughters of publicist Salvador "Bubby" Dacer, appealed to presidential candidates to let Lacson be accountable for his actions.
"Senators (Benigno) Noynoy Aquino (III) and Richard Gordon, you have both suffered the loss of your fathers in a brutal manner. You amongst everyone know what our families are going through...If his murder involves a political figure, I hope politics will not be a reason for justice not to be served," Carina's letter read.
"Former President (Joseph) Erap (Estrada), please stop telling the world how close our families are because you very well know, our families are not close. If our families are close, you would have helped us immediately when our father was abducted in 2000. Yet, to this day, you have offered no information or assistance. If you really are close to our father, give us the information that will give justice for his death," it said.
Carina also asked administration candidate, former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro "to ensure that we progress from our current state of no one being punished for heinous crimes."
"Masterminds, not only hitmen, need to face charges," she said.
"I was asked by a friend the other day how I honestly feel about Senator Lacson. All I could say was at least now the senator knows how it feels to lose sleep at night. My friend responded his losing sleep is nothing compared to what I and my family went though. My friend was right," she added.
