MANILA, Philippines ? (UPDATE 2) One person died when his vehicle suddenly exploded near an upscale mall in Taguig City Tuesday noon but police said it was not an act of terror.
City police chief Senior Superintendent Camilo Cascolan identified the fatality as Remigio Ang.
Prior to the explosion, the victim was returning to his condominium unit after buying grocery items nearby, Cascolan said.
Ang was to park his car near the gate of his condominium when it suddenly exploded.
City police chief Senior Superintendent Camilo Cascolan said Ang was on board his Honda Civic (TNM-865) when it exploded.
The driver was reportedly ?burned,? he said.
Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina said that the incident could not have been caused by a bomb as a bomb would have left the victim?s body ?mangled.?
Cascolan also dismissed speculations that the incident was caused by a bomb.
?Initial findings by the Explosives and Ordinance Team in Taguig suspect continuous combustion. There is no laceration on the body of the victim caused by shrapnel or hi-velocity materials consequent to bomb explosion,? Cascolan said.
?We have ruled out bomb explosion,? he added.
