MANILA, Philippines -- Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno has announced his plan to seek reelection alongside Mayor Alfredo Lim in the 2010 local elections.

Moreno, former actor and Francisco Domagoso in real life, made the announcement on Saturday night during his 35th birthday celebration at the Rizal Coliseum, even as he assured the support of his party ?Asenso Manileno? for Lim?s reelection bid.

The vice mayor addressed the crowd of some 50,000 at the coliseum, saying that his party has unanimously chosen to support Lim because of his ?genuine concern for the poor and unique ability to lead the city.?

Moreno pointed out that in the two years he was vice mayor, his ?working relationship with Lim had always been harmonious despite the fact that they had different political affiliations, because they both have the benefit of the poor constituents on top of their agenda.?

He further cited Lim?s efforts in building schools for the benefit of the poor but deserving young Manilenos. He added that he has always looked up to the mayor as a ?father and mentor.?

At the same event, Lim announced that he has selected Moreno to be his running mate in next year?s elections citing the vice mayor?s ?principles, clean track record and love for the city and its residents as evidenced by his pro-poor programs.?

Lim even raised the hand of Moreno as ?the next mayor of Manila.? He said he would be "leaving Manila in good hands? if he were to bow out of Manila?s politics.

The mayor warned the crowd against supporting candidates who are ?good in flowery speeches.?

?He (Moreno) is a man of his word, has conviction, is principled and, like me, rose from poverty so he understands life and the needs of the poor,? Lim said in Filipino, adding ?Finally, I found a real person to become my vice mayor.?

He further admitted his previous mistake of endorsing the mayoralty bid of his then vice mayor and now Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza. Lim said that his choice of Moreno was right, ?because a public servant is known not for his flowery speeches but for his achievements.?

Comedian, show business icon and talent promoter German Moreno made an appearance during Moreno?s 35th birthday celebration to express his support for the tandem, which he said, ?will help Manila continue moving forward.?

During his speech, the man whom many call Tito Germs revealed that he and Lim have been close friends since the mayor was a beat patrolman. Isko, who had his heyday as a teen star, has always considered "Tito Germs" second parent.

The celebration, it was learned, was not only intended to mark the vice mayor?s birthday but was meant to raise donations for the victims of typhoon ?Ondoy.? Those who attended brought cans of sardines, noodle packs, and bags of rice.

The huge crowd turnout, Moreno said, ?proves that even the poor can help.?
