MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 3) The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) had given first aid treatment to at least 229 Catholic devotees by early evening Friday, feast day of the Black Nazarene, its chairman Richard Gordon said.
Most suffered from dizziness and minor injuries, Gordon said, adding the figures were as of 11 p.m.
A Red Cross ambulance brought devotee Ramon Francisco, 31, to the Jose Reyes Memorial Hospital after he complained of difficulty in breathing, said Jose Rafael Cesar Atencio, PNRC communication office’s information editor.
At the PNRC’s first aid station, 28-year-old Perfecto Gabon was among the 31persons who received treatment for minor foot wounds, abrasions, dizziness, hypertension, and chest pains.
Quoting Red Cross team leader Francisco Vargas, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that there were 23, including two elderly women between 45 and 50 years old who were rushed to the Philippine General Hospital after showing signs of a possible heart attack.
There were six PNRC first aid stations in the vicinity of the Quiapo church.
Earlier in the day, INQUIRER.net had posted that 198 people were hurt, which Atencio said was possible as the figure could have included those who had been treated by the Department of Health and other volunteer organizations.
