MANILA, Philippines--Over 100 members of militant groups calling for the immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza City staged a rally in front of the Israeli embassy in Makati City Tuesday morning.
Led by Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo, the protesters held a short program in front of the Israeli embassy’s office on Trafalgar Building, Dela Costa Avenue around 10:15 a.m.
The group condemned the intensified attacks of Israeli forces which had killed more than 500 Palestinians, including innocent women and children, wounded over 2,000 others.
"We add our voices to the growing international condemnation of Israel’s invasion of Gaza. As a former colony, we Filipinos should sympathize with the Palestinian people who are the aggrieved party in this war," Ocampo told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Members of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) and its allied organizations likewise lambasted US President George W. Bush for supporting the bombings of residential districts in Gaza.
"Instead of advocating war, the US should heed the decision of the United Nation Security Council to broker a ceasefire in Gaza and call for the withdrawal of Israeli troops," Ocampo said.
The militant lawmaker said he would file a resolution urging the House of Representatives to denounce Israel's assault of the Palestinian region.
Ocampo also challenged the Arroyo administration to condemn the hostilities "even for humanitarian considerations."
The protesters left the area an hour later to give way to another group of rallyists, which also held a similar protest action.
