MANILA, Philippines -- Two days before the New Year’s Eve revelry, the Department of Health has listed over 100 cases of firecracker-related injuries and has placed all public hospitals under “Code White.”
In its official website, the DoH said 119 injuries were recorded from December 21 to 29.
There have been no cases of Watusi ingestion and stray bullet injuries reported as of posting time, the report said. But six percent or about seven of the 119 firecracker victims needed amputation while 25 or 22 percent of the victims sustained eye injury. Most of those injured or about 63 percent came from the National Capital Region, according to the report.
Most of the victims used Piccolo and five-star firecrackers, listed as among those banned by the Philippine National Police Fire and Explosives Division.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque is also set to inspect various hospitals in Metro Manila starting December 30, as the department ordered all public hospitals to be on "Code White" on Dec. 31, 2008 and Jan. 1, 2009 to ensure prompt emergency services.
Under “Code White,” all hospitals must have adequate manpower to accommodate as many patients as possible; and that there will be enough drugs and medicines, vaccines, medical supplies and equipments available at all times.
