Gang stealing computers busted by cops

MANILA, Philippines--Three members of a gang known for stealing computers in Caloocan were arrested early morning Sunday while ransacking another computer shop in Gracepark, Caloocan.

Artaban Arenas, 40; Ronaldo Castro, 40; and Reynaldo Santos 44, were caught red-handed 5:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Workplace Computer Shop, at the corner of 5th Avenue and Rizal Ave.

The suspects were trying to load computers into a blue and gray Nissan Vannette parked right in front of the establishment when the police arrived, he said.

Supt. William Macavinta, Caloocan police chief, said in an interview that the three suspects were members of the Bolt Cutter gang, which was known in the area for robbing establishments selling computers in Caloocan.

"This gang has victimized many computer shops in Caloocan. Their modus operandi includes stealing and then re-selling computers. So once they get orders for new computers, they start robbing computer shops so they have something to sell," said Macavinta.

Macavinta said based on tips from tricycle drivers and the barangay tanod (village watchmen) in the area, the Caloocan police were able to catch the robbers in the act of loading their loot in the van.

He said the group has been involved in a series of computer robberies in the area, the latest of which involved another computer shop along 11th avenue in Caloocan.

"The incident at 5th avenue involved the same tactic used in previous cases -- a van is parked in front of the establishment, so passersby will not notice that a robbery is ongoing," said Macavinta.

A steel saw was recovered from the suspects, which police said was the tool used to cut open the locks of the computer shop.
