MAKATI City, Philippines -- The concept of a "greener IT" is convincing boardrooms to consider investing in new infrastructure, EMC executives told reporters here.
Greener IT or computing is a concept that goes beyond saving on energy, and producing less waste that would harm the environment, said Par Botes, chief technology officer of EMC Asia Pacific and Japan.
Botes said greener IT is now being used to push investments in new IT infrastructure within organizations.
In the Philippines, local organizations are including "Green IT" in their procurement agenda, added Ronnie Latinazo, country manager of EMC Philippines.
As more companies are becoming more concerned with their "social responsibility," greener computing is now an attractive way of explaining new investments in storage infrastructure and other necessities, Botes said.
Companies are now starting to believe that "virtualization" of date storage systems will not only save cost, but also promote more efficient systems creating a greener computing environment, added Patrick Chan, chief technology advisor of IDC Asia Pacific Emerging Technologies.
Apart from trying to reduce the total cost of their infrastructure and building secure IT environments, Botes said chief information officers can readily explain and justify investments in infrastructure by "going green."
EMC has been advocating several methods of managing the growing amount of corporate data and still following its "green IT" concept. These methods include virtualization of infrastructure, "de-duplication" of data and the management of critical and non-critical data, the EMC executives said.
Virtualization usually involves consolidation of information systems to encourage less energy consumption in data centers. De-duplication is simply a method of reducing the amount of stored multiple copies of data in many places across a network.
In the Philippines, Botes said that most organizations are now aware of "virtualization" and are at the stage of making that a reality.
"Green IT is equal to prestige and better bottom-line for organizations," the EMC executive said, as he noted that the Philippines is currently in the “how” instead of “do we still need to do this” stage.
