DAVAO CITY—A farmer activist was killed while her husband, daughter and two grandchildren were in critical condition after armed men attacked them in Compostela Valley on Thursday evening.
Carolina Arado succumbed from gunshot wounds while the rest of her family were immediately brought to a hospital for medical treatment.
The family was inside their house in Barangay Anitapan in the town of Mabini when armed men attacked them at around 6:40 p.m., said Christoper Alia of the Hugpong sa Maguuma sa Mabini (Humabin).
Alia said the Arados were active members of Humabin, a progressive farmers’ group that strongly opposed the entry of large-scale mining operations in the province.
The couple also joined campaigns against alleged abuses of government forces in the area./rga
