BAGUIO CITY–This is the cold that caught many residents by surprise. Students and workers woke up in an unusually nippy weather that made it difficult for them to get up from bed and take a shower.

The mercury sharply dropped at 8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, from 9.4 degrees on Monday.

It was the lowest recorded by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) station here since Jan. 18, 2014 when the temperature hit 8.1 degrees, said Aljon Tamondong, weather observer here.

He advised residents and tourists to keep themselves warm to avoid getting sick as the weather is expected to become colder in the next few days. It was on Jan. 15, 2009 when this mountain resort city experienced a temperature of 7.5 degrees.

Tamondong said it’s likely that Baguio would beat that record this year due to the cold front./rga
