Journalist, nationalist and former University of the Philippines president Salvador Lopez died of a heart attack Oct. 19, 1993. Born May 27, 1911, he worked in public relations during World War II. He served in the United Nations where he acted as chairman of various bodies, including the Commission on Human Rights. He was among those who drafted the Unesco charter noted for its pioneering declaration on freedom of information. He was elected 11th president of UP on Jan. 23, 1969, a position he held until 1975.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
