2 successive Benguet accidents injure 17

BAGUIO CITY—Seventeen people were hurt in two successive accidents on the road to the Asin Hot Springs of Benguet’s Tuba town on Saturday, the Cordillera police said.

At 9:15 a.m., a public utility jeepney carrying 13 passengers malfunctioned as it descended Km. 12 in Sitio Lasong, Tadiangan village, prompting its driver Jake Cenon Ponce to direct his vehicle toward a mountain slope.

The jeepney (with plate number AYL-189) fell on its side due to the impact. Its passengers were treated at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC).

Ponce said his brakes failed.

At 9:30 a.m., the brakes of a Toyota Hi-ace van (with plate numbers VCF-732) driven by Julius Relano Reforma also malfunctioned as it descended Km. 13 in Sitio Lasong.

The van hit a Mitsubishi Pajero (with plate numbers XEU-454) driven by Samuel Serano Fontanilla.

BGHMC doctors are treating Fontanilla’s passengers: 2-year-old Allijah Samantha Cueto Co, Raymund Baltazar Jiminez, Ana Prescila Manalo Cueto, and Camille Abad Barca. IDL
