4 strong quakes rattle Mindanao on Saturday
COTABATO CITY — Mindanao was hit on Saturday by four fairly strong tectonic earthquakes that shook the eastern side of the island.
The first moderately strong quake struck at 1:33 a.m. 16 kilometers (km) northwest of Davao City. It measured 4.7 magnitude, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Reported intensities were:
- Intensity IV- Davao City; Kidapawan City
- Intensity III- Makilala, North Cotabato
- Intensity II- Kabacan and Arakan, North Cotabato
At 7:27 p.m., another moderately strong quake (magnitude 4.0) hit the seas off Davao Oriental at 126 km southwest of Sarangani province.
The quake has a depth of 142 kilometers.
An hour later, at 8:29 p.m., a magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit the same province. It was felt in the capitol of Sarangani in Alabel town and in General Santos City. It occurred 34 km southeast of Sarangani at a depth 126 kilometers.
Another moderately strong quake occurred at 10:34 p.m. This time at 47 km southwest of Cortes, Surigao del Sur. Its depth was 14 km under the sea.
Apart from the quakes that ranged 4.0 to 5.2, other smaller temblors hit the island.
One of them, a magnitude 3.2, struck Carmen, North Cotabato, at 6:20 p.m. Phivolcs said the tectonic quake was traced 12 kilometers from Poblacion Carmen, North Cotabato.
The Carmen quake had a depth of 22 kilometers and triggered by movement of underground plates.
The tremor which was tectonic in origin was traced 16 kilometers north of Davao City.
No injuries or damage were reported in the incidents.
