2 moderate quakes rattle Ilocos Norte

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — Two successive earthquakes rocked Ilocos Norte on Sunday night causing alarm to residents who have also been bearing torrential rains from storm Egay.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5 tremor occurred at 8:56 p.m. six kilometers southeast of Batac City. No damage was reported but residents there posted on Facebook that they later felt aftershocks.

The tremor was felt at intensity 4 in Vigan City and Santa in Ilocos Sur and in Paoay in Ilocos Norte; intensity 3 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, Baguo City,
Abra and Ballesteros, Cagayan; intensity 2 in Tuguegarao, Aparri and Apayao and intensity 1 in Dagupan City. (Intensity 4 means most of the people
inside their homes or buildings feel the movement and a few people outside may feel the tremor. Intensity 3 means many people inside their homes or buildings would feel the shaking but hardly anybody feels it outside.

Intensity 2 means a few people would feel the tremor if they are at rest. Intensity 1 means people do not feel the tremor.)

The second temblor measuring magnitude 4.3 occurred at 9:12 p.m. two kilometers northwest of Marcos in Ilocos Norte.

Phivocs reported no intensity in the latter temblor nor any damage in affected areas.
