Woman shields boyfriend in Lapu stabbing attack

A 21-year-old woman was stabbed and wounded by her former boyfriend in barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, at dawn yesterday.

Jessabelle Oyao, 21, was walking with her current boyfriend Van Niel Gomez, 27, when the attack occurred.

The suspect, John Ryan Hernandez, 28, of barangay Agus, Lapu-Lapu City, was arrested after the incident.

Police said Oyao and Gomez came from work at Hap Jap Restaurant.

The couple were walking home when a knife-welding Hernandez blocked their path.

Police said Hernandez tried to stab Gomez but Oyao shielded her boyfriend and got stabbed in the left arm.

Hernandez again tried to stab Oyao but the woman took the blows anew and was stabbed in the thigh.

Hernandez ran away after hitting his former girlfriend twice.

Gomez was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Barangay safety volunteers in  Basak arrested Hernandez in a follow-up operation.
