No classes from pre-school to high school in Albay due to ‘heightened risks to public safety’

albay-mapMANILA, Philippines–Albay Governor Joey Salceda ordered the suspension of classes in the entire province on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

“In view of heightened risks to public safety and public health, classes suspended except college and (post secondary.) Parents should fetch their children especially in kinder. So ordered,” he said in a Facebook post.

In a succeeding post, Salceda cited the state weather bureau’s Doppler radar rain forecast as the reason why classes were suspended. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical & Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Wednesday that Bicol may experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.

As of 8a.m., Mayon Volcano was still in a state of unrest and remained under Alert Level 3. In the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology detected one rockfall event.
