NBP inmate takes female civilian as hostage

MANILA, Philippines–A hostage taking incident occured inside the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) Medium Security Compound Monday afternoon.

NBP acting Superintendent Celso Bravo said the incident started 12:30 p.m. inside a handicraft making factory of Samsung Philippines operating inside the prison facility.

Bravo said the victim was a civilian employee identified as Susan Egana while the hostage-taker was Dennis Gonzaga. He threatened to kill Egana with a screwdriver.

A chaplain of the NBP tried to negotiate with Gonzaga who said that he wanted to talk to his relatives. The hostage-taking was resolved around 2:40 p.m. when Gonzaga’s sibling arrived.

Bravo said, upon seeing his sibling, Gonzaga immediately released the hostage and turned himself over to authorities.

Gonzaga is facing 17 year imprisonment for parricide.
