5 new Inquirer scholars picked

MANILA, Philippines—Five college students from the country’s premier universities have received this year’s Inquirer Journalism Scholarship as the newspaper’s continuing effort to support students with exceptional grades and talent for writing.

Joining the 67 Inquirer Journalism Scholarship graduates since 1993 are: Journalism juniors Krixia Subingsubing, Jennifer Cabildo and Matthew Reysio-Cruz of the University of the Philippines-Diliman; Creative Writing junior Jamela Ariella Braganza of the University of the Philippines-Diliman; and Communications senior Fazniyara Lukman of Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Inquirer president Sandy Prieto-Romualdez, publisher Raul Pangalangan, assistant vice president for corporate affairs Connie Kalagayan and Readers’ Advocate Elena Pernia attended the official awarding and contract signing held at the Inquirer office in Makati on Aug. 6.

“The scholarship is not just about financial support, it is the name of the Inquirer that you carry… the values of the Inquirer posted all over the building which we take very seriously,” Pangalangan said.

The scholars will enjoy full tuition and other enrollment fees subsidy, including monthly stipends and books and supplies allowances for school years 2014 to 2016.

They will also be tapped to participate in various youth-oriented activities of the Inquirer.

The scholarships are given every other year to at least five students starting on their third year in college. To further improve their skills, they are given the opportunity to work for the Inquirer for at least one year after graduation.
