Twister slams coastal village on outskirts of Digos City

DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur – At least eight houses and two small fishing boats were damaged when a whirlwind struck a coastal neighborhood in Barangay (village) Sinawilan here around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in a report Wednesday that no one was injured during the phenomenon. Damage to property was initially estimated at P100,000.

Superintendent Querubin Manalang, Digos City police chief, said based strong, swirling wind thrashed houses made of light materials. Some of the houses were damaged when big trees fell on them, he said.

Bad weather has been prevailing over Mindanao for the past days now due to the tail end of Typhoon Henry and tropical depression Inday.

The local disaster risk council said its rescue workers, along with volunteers in the outlying villages, remain on standby status for any emergency as  bad weather persisted on Wednesday.
