Giant croc captured in Agusan Sur creek

MONSTER CROC In this photo taken on Sunday, Mayor Cox Elorde of Bunawan, Agusan del Sur province, shows how huge was the 1,075-kg crocodile captured by residents and crocodile farm staff along a creek late Saturday. The 6.4-meter (21-foot) male crocodile is bigger than the 5.5 meter saltwater crocodile in Cairns, Australia, that the Guinness Book of Records says is the biggest captive crocodile in the world. AP

Villagers and experts have captured a one-ton saltwater crocodile which they plan to make the star of a planned ecotourism park in Agusan del Sur province.

The male crocodile was described in an Associated Press report as 6.4 meters (21 feet) long which, if confirmed, would make it bigger than the 5.5-meter saltwater crocodile in Cairns, Australia.

The Australian crocodile has been cited by the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest captive crocodile in the world.

Mayor Cox Elorde on Monday said that dozens of villagers and experts ensnared the crocodile along a creek in Bunawan town, Agusan del Sur, after a three-week hunt. It was captured by villagers using a trap.

Elorde said the crocodile killed a carabao in an attack witnessed by villagers last month and is also suspected of having attacked a fisherman who went missing in July.

Elorde said putting the huge crocodile in a tourism park would turn it “from a threat into an asset.”

The Australian crococile, named Cassius, is believed to be at least 100 years old. Reports from AP and Inquirer Research

Congratulations to Ronnie Sumiller and his team from Palawan who trapped the record breaking size croc, known to the locals as ‘Potol’ (Slasher). This is a story, over two years in the making, but it may not be over yet since there supposedly is another one that is over 27 ft. in length. If this one has a missing foot, then the hunt for ‘Potol’ continues.

Mga ignorante ! Crocodiles and corrupt public servants are non-comparable. This is the reason why most filipinos stigmatise a crocodile. Leave the croc alone, as they have every right to live in our country like any other living and breathing animal. We have to stop this senseless disregard of animal welfare and stop comparing them to almost every one who works for the govt.

I have mixed feelings for this. Animals are not a threat to humans. Humans are threat to animals. I share the sentiment on one of the posters here (Jaz). There should be a way to let these animals live freely and not become “threat” to humans. I do not like the idea of making it an attraction for tourism. If it is really a threat and confirmed it is a man-eating monster then kill the croc and not make it into a circus!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001852991728 Cant Escape

litenshadow, your comment is confusing. Are you pro-animal or not? You want it to live freely but you also want it to be killed if it’s a threat to human.

Even though we know that it is considered a threat to human as well as livestock, it would be best to let it live in confinement than to kill it because it is extraordinary. It will be an attraction to curious people especially tourists to see it alive.

      • Anonymous

There are cases where animals go beyond their normal behaviours and prey on humans (not only in the movies). These animals should be killed and not treated as some kind of attraction. I am not saying that croc is already one of them. It should be confirmed.

Why do we have to insert political insinuations in this article? For me, I am an in awe to see a big salt water crocodile in the country, this means that, that part where the croc was captured was habitable enough for it to grow big like that, unpolluted and healthy area pa. I hope Dr. Brady (of National Geographic) would visit the croc as well as the area where it was captured so as that the people living around the area will be educated to avoid conflict with humans and the crocs.

They will really eat your funds until you become poor as what in Pres. President NOYNOYs administration is now unearthing crocodiles in the government (I personally hope also for the private sector) due to their anomalous transactions, and this (catching the big crocodile) is a good sign that Pres. NOYNOY will succeed. Because catching the biggest crocodile ever even it took so many people and waiting for very long time, made such dramatic results of catching the CROCODILE. Our old Filipino culture “BAYANIHAN” had been observed again (I know it is not practiced anymore in our country, but really gave promising results!). Pres. NOYNOY in catching CROCODILES (corrupt government officials) will surely succeed if we fellow Filipino people unite and do BAYANIHAN in helping our President in his goals in catching CROCODILEs in our country.Hope Pres. NOYNOY will make those crocodiles put in jail to serve their respective sentences and put justice to the Filipino people, not by just filing criminal/plunder cases.

Mayor Cox Elorde, here are some suggestions on how you will advertize your proposed tourist attraction: :

    “Cox’s Croc.”

“The biggest croc in a nation of crooks.”

“One of the few remaining crocodiles in the Philippines in the private sector.”

Mayor, you collect some viewing fees. But exempt politicians, generals and officials and employees of the BIR, Bureau of Customs and DPWH on the ground that you do not charge someone visiting his relative.

Hindi pa siya matitinik. i just hope these crocs end up in a good sanctuary and by that, I meant, not a zoo, something like those animal sanctuaries in Palawan where animals are free to roam around (I don’t think may zoo sa Palawan, it’s more of nature sanctuary) meanwhile, we should go find the real crocs, yung nasa kamara for example. :))

So exquisite it’s beauty that it should be preserved and protected. That is a very rare croc considering it’s huge size it must be at least 100 years old. This croc just shows how rare the specie is. Crocs are territorial and a croc that size would have a huge territory maybe a few kilometers at least. The area should be protected by law from poaching and man-made destruction of their habitats.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t realize that salt water crocodiles were so big. I’ve seen lots of alligators back when I lived in Florida, but the average “big” alligator is only about 12-15ft long and weighs a little more than 300lbs. Also, wildlife conservationist there agree that controlled hunting of alligators actually saves them. (Big alligators eat everything smaller than it as well as little alligators, so killing the bigger ones actually allow the little alligators as well as other animals to grow) (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/10/1022_Ally_1.html) That brings me to some questions. Are crocodiles similar to alligators in that big crocodiles also eat little crocodiles? Would it be safer and healthier for the crocodile population to be hunted at a very strict controlled manner? Or would it be better to just let them grow this big? What is the best way to help the crocodiles while keeping the human population safe from attacks? Hopefully a crocodile expert can answer these questions for me.

Oh I hope they do not kill or abuse it. Animals like the Saltwater croc are one of our nation’s natural resources.  I hope the authorities educate people of the value of these magnificent animals. The PH also has the reticulated python, one of the largest snakes in existence. Uneducated people tend to kill these animals on sight. Let us cherish our natural animals, protect their natural habitat from illegal logging and pollution. They can be a great value to our tourism industry and economy in the future.

The disturbance that Saltwater Corcodiles create to their enviroment is close to zero, because it is so silent and restraint. For any prey the end would come almost fast as a flash – out of a free life and without any torture or captivity. This anicient living thing on the very top of the food chain for so may million years seems to be something that is moulded in some form of real wisedom. And todays mankind is exactly the opposite: Holding Billions of Birds, mammals and other animals most brutal prisons for their ENTIRE LIFE before killing them for cheap food, destroying the enviroment of any other lifeforms in a way that has never been kown in earth history – and now, finaly, mankind has found the biggest and oldest of the wise crocodiles and is after them to cage them in some Disney Park or what ever. There is not even a proove they have killed any person. It is a big shame.
