Woman ‘arranging marriages’ as easy ticket to Canada sued

/ 01:44 AM July 21, 2013

A woman is being sued in Quezon City for allegedly failing to make good on her promise to send a girl abroad by finding her a Canadian husband.

Edna Iskander was allegedly paid P258,000 to make such arrangements last year but failed to deliver, according to the estafa complaint filed in the city prosecutor’s office by the girl’s mother, a public school teacher from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan province.

The officer on the case, PO3 Modestino Juanson, said the teacher went to the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit alleging that Iskander promised to arrange her daughter’s marriage to a Canadian citizen so she could easily migrate to the latter’s country.

The complainant said she met Iskander, reportedly a Balintawak resident and married to a Canadian herself, through some relatives in a family reunion last year, during which Iskander claimed that she had already sent several women to Canada by setting up marriages with Canadians.

Through a series of bank deposits from April 4 to 18 last year, the complainant paid a total of P258,000 to Iskander supposedly to expedite the processing of her daughter’s papers.

The complainant recalled that the suspect gave assurances that her daughter would be wed to a Canadian by May 2012. But after getting the money, Iskander could no longer be reached through her phone or found at the address she gave, she said.
