One in 11 considers leaving Catholic Church

About one in every 11 Filipino Catholics, or 9.2 percent, sometimes considers leaving the Church, a recent survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) found.

Results of the survey, conducted from Feb. 15 to 17, also found that compared with members of other denominations, Filipino Catholics were less devout and active in attending church services.

The noncommissioned survey used face-to-face interviews with 1,200 respondents nationwide. It has a margin of error of plus-or-minus three percentage points.

It was conducted two weeks before Pope Benedict XVI stepped down from the papacy because of old age. He was replaced on March 19 by Pope Francis, who vowed reforms in a Church plagued by scandals and allegations of infighting.

Conducting such a survey for the first time, SWS said it took its cue from assertions made by Fr. Joel Tabora S.J., president of Ateneo de Davao University.

In his Feb. 7 blog post, Tabora said: “The Catholic Church is in trouble—even in Catholic Philippines …. People have been leaving the Catholic Church. People are about to leave the Church. It is time, I think, for Mahar Mangahas to take out his social survey tools to help us understand what is happening.”

In a statement released Tuesday, SWS said there was survey evidence to support Tabora’s assertions.

Decline in attendance

SWS said the evidence consisted of its surveys between 1991 and 2013 showing a (slight) decline in Catholics’ church attendance and the finding of the survey last February “of a strong inverse relation between Catholics’ church attendance and giving consideration to leaving the Catholic Church.”

The latest survey found that 81 percent of Filipinos were Catholics, 6 percent were Protestants, 3 percent were Iglesia ni Cristo members, and 3 percent were of other Christian denominations.

Six percent said they were Muslims, and 0.1 percent said they belonged to other religious groups.

Between 1991 and 2013, the average annual percentage of adults identifying themselves as Catholics in surveys ranged from a high of 88 percent in 1997 to a low of 80 percent in 2007, SWS said.

The survey asked Catholics to react to the statement, “Sometimes I think I might leave the Catholic Church.” They were made to choose among the following answers: “strongly agree;” “somewhat agree;” “undecided if agree or disagree;” “somewhat disagree;” and “strongly disagree.”

The 9.2 percent who said they sometimes thought of leaving the Catholic Church included those who “strongly agree” (2.5 percent) and “somewhat agree” (6.7 percent) to the statement.

Those who said otherwise consisted of 11.4 percent who “somewhat disagree” and 74.2 percent who “strongly disagree.”

Just 5.2 percent said they “neither agree nor disagree” with the statement.

Common sentiment

Leaving the Catholic Church is a common sentiment among Catholics who said they have no religious belief and whose attendance in church services has waned, according to SWS.

In terms of religious belief, the percentages of Catholics who sometimes think of turning their backs on the Church are the following: 57.3 percent among those who say they have no religious belief; 16.1 percent among the not very religious; 9.1 percent among the somewhat religious; and 4.9 percent among the very religious.

By church attendance, those who think of leaving the Church include those who attend church services once a year (18 percent), several times a year (14.5 percent), once a month (12.9 percent), several times a month (7.1 percent) and every week (5.4 percent).

In its recent survey, SWS classified respondents as somewhat religious (56 percent), very religious (32 percent), not very religious (11 percent) and not having religious belief (1 percent).

Least devout

Compared with other groups, Catholics are the least devout, with only 29 percent saying they consider themselves very religious. The figure is higher among Protestants (50 percent), Iglesia ni Cristo members (43 percent), other Christian denominations (41 percent) and Muslims (38 percent).

Dramatic drop

Catholics also lag behind other groups when it comes to attending church services, with only 37 percent saying they go to church every week, a dramatic drop from 64 percent registered in July 1991.

The number of weekly churchgoers is higher among Iglesia ni Cristo members (70 percent), Protestants (64 percent) and other Christians (62 percent). Seventy-five percent of Muslims go to the mosque at least weekly.

‘Different situation’

The media chief of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines downplayed the results of the survey.

Msgr. Pedro Quitorio said that packed churches during the recent Holy Week celebrations ran counter to the SWS survey results. “I don’t know about the scientific basis of the survey but based from what we just experienced this Holy Week, we saw a different situation on the ground,” he said.

Quitorio said churches remained packed during Sundays while the recent Holy Week celebrations were “among the most attended” in recent memory. He said he celebrated a packed Mass in Quiapo Church on Easter Sunday and also before 10,000 Catholics at the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia.

He also said that many Sunday Masses in parishes across the country remained to be “standing room only” affairs.

He noted that the El Shaddai movement, Couples for Christ and other Catholic charismatic movements were effective in drawing inactive Catholics back to church.

‘Reason over religion’

Reproductive health advocate Carlos Celdran said the survey was “a sign that Filipinos are becoming a critical people and now slowly choosing reason over religion.”

“It is also a sign that Filipinos are becoming more aware of the flaws of the Filipino Catholic hierarchy and are disappointed …. The stubborn and obsolete thinking of Filipino bishops are turning them away,” said Celdran, also a tour guide and performing artist, said in a text message.

Celdran was found guilty by a Manila court early this year of offending religious feelings in 2010 when, dressed like Jose Rizal, he stood in front of the altar of the Manila Cathedral and disrupted an ecumenical service as he raised a placard with the word “Damaso” on it. The flamboyant tour operator had been protesting Church opposition to the reproductive health bill.

WTF! Only 1 in 11 lang? Matagal na tayo niloloko ng RCC and yet only 1 in 11 are thinking of leaving the catholic church? 1 in 11 after 500 years of deception? Only in the Philippines, the only catholic nation in Asia.

On second thought, maybe there’s also some wisdom in staying with the RCC. Mayaman ang RCC. Sa sobrang yaman ng RCC, CBCP has huge stock holdings in Ayala Corp, SMC, Philex, BPI, Phinma Corp, Atlas Mining, Meralco, Petron, Concrete Aggregates Corp and etc. Walang magugutom sa ilalim ng RCC.

Check these sources and see for yourself.

I guess you are not a Catholic the reason of your negative attitude towards the church. Philippines is catholic dominated country, 81 percent of its people and all its presidents are Catholics. While it was so strict in its practices then, the church has become so liberal in freeing its members in his will and obligation in attending masses. The cathedral in Iligan City and other churches are always filled up during Sunday services. Attendance in church services is not a measure of ones belief in god because its a personal one. If the church made an investment in business sectors it is just right because it needs money to support its operation and helping the poor. The best and expensive institutions in the country are owned by catholic church but in their care are thousand of indigents whose education are subsidized by the church like the night classes of De La Salle.

Do you think the catholic church goers…Go to churches because of these priest?

      • http://twitter.com/NinWalter Moonbuster

I assume you are Roman Catholic and you understand what “in
persona Christi” or “in the person of Christ” means.

To sum up, priests merely represents Christ before the people.
So yeah, Catholics go to church to pray and hear mass from Christ’s
representative and yes “because of these priests”.

Although in the Catholic teaching, it is stressed out that priests
are not divine as Christ and priests are inclined to sin.

But to what extend> Rape and pedophilia? There’s an
alarming of rape cases against Catholic priests – and the scandals are
        unbearable.

Let’s just take Msgr. Garcia’s case for example. He admitted
raping these boys and yet he remained as a priest until he got sacked by Vatican.

It is these scandals that make people leave Catholicism.
After all how could you trust “Christ representatives” when they can’t even
follow the doctrines. As the old adage, practice what you preach.

Actually the question you posted was my epiphany— why go
to church when you could pray in silence in your room, it is more intimate conversation
with God than hearing these faux Christ’s representative discuss politics.

they dont help the poor except where they are seen i know i live among them and they dont spend one piso on the poor go into the mountains and fishing villages and ask. the village in the mountains where my wifes family lives has turned protestant because the catholic church woouldnt help them but the protestants did the church is shooting itself in the food. my wife and her friends quit going to church brcause at every service the priest would rant and rave about birth control and divorce nothing about god

      • Jomex

why do you dismiss the criticism? remember, he stated some sources for you to check. yan ang mahirap sa catholic church, you think you are all good that you blind yourself from the realities happening around you. it is also biased to say that all negative criticisms come from non-catholics, it is also true that criticisms come from catholics. dont be so naive my friend.

      • Jomex

god is not falsifiable so you can invent whatever traits and characteristics you want like sovereign, alpha, omega (oil), first, last, middle, beginning, end, timeless, spaceless, faceless, powerful, merciful, beautiful, etc etc. god is whatever you want him to be! and this brings us back to the very first point: we created god! god is our endless desire, our dreams and our fears. god is whatever you want him to be. but there’s no evidence in reality of this being!

“So what does the Bible tell us?

        Who should we kill? ?

        Homosexuals (Lev.20:13, Rom.1:26-32)
        Adulterers (Lev.20:10, Deut.22:22)
        Disobedient children (Deut.21:20-21, Lev.20:9, Exod.21:15)
Women who are not virgins on their wedding night (Deut.22:13-21)
All non-Christians (parable told by Christ – Luke.19:27)
Those accused of wickedness by at least two people (Deut.17:2-7)
Anyone who works on the Sabbath (Exod.35:2-3, Num.15:32-6) (not even to kindle a fire, and no exclusion for ambulance drivers)

        Women

It is shameful for a woman to speak in church (1Cor.14:34-5)
A man must OK his wife´s words if they are to have force (Num.30:8)
A woman must not teach or hold authority over a man (1Tim.2:12)
Lot saves the messengers from the men of Sodom by offering up his virgin daughters to ´do to them as you please´ (Gen.19:8) Kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourself every girl who has never slept with a man (Moses – Num.31:17-8)

        Slavery

        God supports slavery (Lev.25:44-6, Exod.21:2-8, Eph.6:5, Col.3:22)
Instructions on how to sell your daughter as a slave (Exod.21:7-8)
When to give your slaves severe or light beatings (Luke.12:42-8)
OK to beat slaves only if they don´t die within 2 days (Exod.21:20-1)
How to mark your slave: drive an awl through its ear (Deut.15:17)

        Marriage

It´s best if all people remain unmarried. Marriage is a lesser-of-two-evils compromise for Christians too weak to resist their sexual urges, for it is better to marry than to burn. (Paul – 1Cor.7:1-2, 8-9, 25-6, 38)
The rapist of an unwed woman must buy her and make her his wife (apparently a far more ‘holy’ union than a genuine, loving same-sex relationship) – Deut.22:28-9

        Justice

If a man suspects his wife of cheating he can serve her a cursed drink; if she becomes deformed, then that proves her guilt (Num.5:12-31)
42 children killed by bears for calling a prophet baldy (2King.2:23-4)
OK to beat your children with a rod – it won’t kill them (Prov.23:13-4)
God commits, orders, or endorses every form of atrocity known to man (pretty much pick a page of the Old Testament at random)

Do the Old Testament laws still apply?

Every jot and tittle (Christ Matt.5:17-9)

        Christ, what a role model!

Christ tells us we must hate our entire family, and even our own life, if we want to be one of His disciples (Luke.14:26)
Those who abandon their families will be rewarded (Matt.19:29)
´For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother… And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.´ (Christ – Matt.10:35-6)
I came not to send peace, but a sword (Christ – Matt.10:34)
If you don´t have a sword, sell your clothes to buy one (Luke.22:36)
Curses fig tree for not bearing fruit in off-season (Mark.11:12-4, 20-1)
Didn´t want to help girl because she was a ´dog´ gentile (Matt.15:22-8)

Of course there are several good passages in the Bible, the ones that are carefully selected by your minister for Sunday readings. But (and pardon the analogy) if you find some chocolate in a pile of dung you don´t eat it, right? No. The good is tainted by the bad that surrounds it.”

up until now, yan pa rin ang gawain ng “religious” and takutin ng eternal damnation ang sinumang hindi naniniwala sa pinapaniwalan nila and that includes other people that believes in other religion. If what you say is true and “god loves us all and wants us to be saved, how come he made salvation to be understood differently by every tom dick and harry? given that there are so many religious denominations in the world, which one of them is the true one?

      • InChristAlone_75

Hell is real but it should not be the main reason you would want to believe in God. Do you love your parents because they are your parents or because if you don’t you would have no food, no home, no clothes etc? We love God because He is God, He created us, we should love him not because we are afraid that if we don’t he wounl send us to Hell.

It is wrong to say that it is God who made salvation to be understood differently. Does God confuse us, does He make errors? of course not, it is we who do not understand and who do no not listen. Which is the true church? Pray to God to open your heart, give you wisdom, and discern the TRUTH.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

      • taga_ilog

If God does not confuse us, then how come this passage from the bible which is the word of god does not only confuses but contradicts itself? So you will you say that men are confused and not god? Care to explain this?

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

        Even Jesus’ lineage is confusing

      • TheHappyAgnostic

you mean a god that professes that he loves us and he gave his only begotten son (which is actually himself, in another person) for us. all we just have to do is to accept his love in return or else he will torture us for all eternity. just like a jilted lover who threaten to punish someone who refused him. that is not an act of a sane person, that is an act of a psychopath.

      • magiting78

The truth is within you!!…”Ang naghahanap ay nakakasumpong”..

      • taga_ilog

why don’t you answer directly? I think you know more about the bible,

      • magiting78

The truth is within your heart bro…Bible is just a guide for us..The choice still in you..All these religions has only one bible, but they have their own interpretation, similar with our constitution each lawyer, judges has their own interpration of the law.
All religions claiming they are the truth, the real anointed by God…but decisions is yours…

      • taga_ilog

is that how you’ll be explaining this? I don’t think I’ll be needing a lawyer to explain what I’ve posted earlier, it’s plain and simple, the bible made a booboo, the infallible word of god was not so infallible at all, as for a guide, there is very little reason using it as a guide to life,

2:23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.2:24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

        2 Kings

If I was to be as unyielding and unforgiving as that, I’ll be in jail right now, imagine killing children in the name of god for calling you names?? is that the kind of guide you want to follow? did you skip reading that one?

      • magiting78

I did not read the bible for debate purposes…I read the bible for my own guide I took and I apply what I understand….I can’t caught what God’s in mind I am just human being with lots of limitation, I don’t want to go behind that..

      “The God That Failed”

      Pride you took

      Pride you feel

Pride that you felt when you’d kneel

      Not the word

      Not the love

Not what you thought from above

      It feeds

      It grows

It clouds all that you will know

      Deceit

      Deceive

      Decide just what you believe

I see faith in your eyes

Never your hear the discouraging lies

I hear faith in your cries

      Broken is the promise, betrayal

The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

      Follow the god that failed

      Find your peace

      Find your say

Find the smooth road in your way

      Trust you gave

      A child to save

Left you cold and him in grave

      It feeds

      It grows

Yeah, but in the song “One,” Hetfield sings the lines: “Hold my breath as I wish for death/Oh please God wake me” (And Justice for All 4: 9-10), which inexplicitly state that in the final analysis, man does in fact need God and is powerless without Him.

It’s not who you are it’s who you know
Others lives are the basis of your own

I don’t believe in this survey. Try to check the parishes near you, every space in and outside of the church is still full of churchgoers.

This fake survey is aimed at discrediting the church who has been very vocal about its opposition on many govt issues.

  • superpilipinas

Yup, Catholic Religion is really hard. It requires a lot of discipline, faith, and sacrifice.

For Catholics, QUALITY is better than quantity. Quality is what makes the Catholic religion awesome. The expectation is so much. That is why there is so much publicity when a new pope is chosen, a new saint is canonized, or when a scandal is exposed.

    • InChristAlone_75

‘Catholic religion is really hard’ so it would not be surprising indeed if members leave. Wonder why how many times you hear mass and receive the communion, pray the rosary and novena to the endless list of catholic saints, one remains far from God, empty inside and often confused about the whole faith?

Jesus came to abolish religion, He is the fulfillment of the Law. Religion can never save you, no matter how religious you are. Come to Jesus with all your sin and shame and He will wash your sins. He will make you a new creation, deep within, not just a superficial change. Christ becomes our righteousness.

But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness,
because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand
      unpunished—Romans 3:21-25

Ganyan talaga ang tao, nagbabago palagi. Ang simbahan bihira.

He-he-he.

He-he-he.

    >>>About one in every 11 Filipino Catholics, or 9.2 percent, sometimes considers leaving the Church, a recent survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) found.<<<

GROSSLY UNDERSTATED!

AGAIN, relationship with a supernatural being is a personal affair and can not be and must not be legislated by anyone entity or person. It is not for anyone to say how one should approach the supernatural because NO ONE has the experience nor the knowledge of HAVING SEEN nor COMMUNICATED with the UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS itself. It's all speculations and pure assumptions that the pretenders and carpetbaggers presume to be true and accurate….and peddle it as such to the gullible individuals who are naive and susceptible to promises of eternal life.

  • $14334231

believing in our Creator doesn’t mean you have to be a christian, or a roman catholic, for that matter….you don’t really have to go to church as long as you believe in our Creator, and in Jesus Christ, and all the saints….I understand that praying doesn’t have to be in a church…..people pray while traveling in a bus, car, train or plane or before going to bed, makes the sign of the cross on almost any thing…..almost every church have an alm box on every saint they have, with real candles or electronic ones….and why do they have to do this???…I thought praying is free….why not just let them buy and light their candles outside (this help the candle sellers) and just let them pray to whomever statue they have in their churches…this could be one of the turn offs that the church is becoming more of a business rather than a soul saver…….

Being a true disciple of Christ means taking up one’s cross, “giving up everything” to follow him and hope in the resurrection, just like the Savior who died for our sins. The Savior gave us an example to serve others as he had done in the washing of the feet. And, He taught us how to pray; laying down the beatitudes as the key to sanctification so that those whose inner attitude are just like little children and, finally partaking of his body and blood in his memory, we may enter the kingdom of heaven. He did not leave us orphans, even after his ascension into heaven, promising that the Holy Spirit would come to teach us all things, even saying that we must use the talents and gifts given us by the Almighty for good. As baptized Christians, we are bound by duty, laymen included, to teach and preach by our words and life, that salvation is at hand. It is finally here! Not only for Jews and Gentiles, but for “all men of good will.”

Faith is a gift we do not deserve through our own merits; it is given by God to those he wished to give it. That is why we must pray for it, nourish it, live it and share it with others. Through the years, the Catholic Church as the official purveyor of that faith (its first seed, like the mustard seed, received in baptism) but also an institution, composed of mere human beings subject to frailties, may have given one or even undue attention to another, in the course of human history. But, it is also a divine institution, and guided by the Holy Spirit, who “breathes where he wills,” cannot err in matters of faith and morals. Being a dynamic institution that is alive and guided by God himself, she welcomes winds of changes and adapts to the demands of life in the modern world, without compromising eternal, supernatural, human and spiritual values that, obviously, may not be accepted by many in the world today, as they were in ages past: even Jesus was “rejected by the builders.” But, that is the challenge of faith today: to go beyond the humanity of the Church and see the eternity of God, for whom, as St. Augustine puts it: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”

Hence, it is the duty of everyone to seek out his own salvation: for, after all, nobody can save us in Christ, except ourselves. Salvation is personal; nobody can do it for you, so that even if grace is given freely, it is still possible for man to reject God’s call to be reconciled and be saved. And, if there appears to be many lukewarm Catholics, internalizing faith is the call of the Year of Faith that we now celebrate in 2013. There is a charismatic movement in the Church today, if meaning is lacking in the experience of some in blind rituals alone. In many cases, joining the Sunday highest form of prayer in the liturgical celebration of the Holy Eucharist, is impossible for many due to distance, motivation and the woes of poverty. For instance, a sidewalk vendor finds it more meaningful to sustain the life and needs of the family selling on a Sunday when other Catholics find time to go to Mass. The examples and the motivations can be different in each case. It is the ordinary layfolk in the world today who can be effective, considering that there are fewer priests and pastors of souls to take care of so many. I believe!

    • Jomex

this is a long homily my friend. the crux of your argument here my friend is FAITH. right? for you faith is a gift, given by god to those he wished to give it. first, by this you mean faith is a selective gift. second, what reason would god have in selecting people to give this gift of faith? for me, it seemed your argument lacks credibility. because you advocate a god who chooses people. just like when god chose the Israelites as the “chosen people”. if your god exists, then it is so unfair of him to choose among people. isnt this gift supposed to be for all? not just to a selected few? the behavior of your supposedly powerful god, if he exists, is erratic! i find no reason to take your argument so seriously. it is laughable at best.

another point i would like to make, if god is real and if he exists, then why go through the whole circus of having “faith” in him, when he can just show himself to the whole world simultaneously via internet or tv just like what the Vogons did in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. it would be easier to convince everyone of his existence. but instead he just hide himself from us. the normal human thing to do is to show himself so that we can know him face to face. im not talking about Jesus. that was 2000 years ago. and besides there are very few evidence left to convince everyone if he existed at all. so what kind of a god who would rely on faith to prove he exist?

The Body of Christ is throughout all churches that preach Christ as the Son of God, who died for us and rose again……….

      ……..Colossians 2:11-17……..

11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

    • jpeter262

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe–and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. (James 2:18-24)

Most RC practices do more harm than good in bringing Christ to the hearts of its flock. This news may not be bad news after all… paano ka naman kasi magiging malapit sa Diyos kung paulit-ulit kang nag-hahail Mary? at kung sino sinong santo mo idinudulog ang mga problema mo? The religious practices of this Church are clear violation of his Word.

Tapos itatali niyo pa yung fallopian tube niya. Tapos iinjectionan niyo pa. Tapos gobyerno pa gagastos. Unplanned pregnancies? C’mon.

The survey shows that Pinoy Catholics are less fanatical than the other denominations who are using brainwashing tactics to strictly control their flock. That Catholics get disillusioned by lackadaisical priests and bishops also show they can think for themselves and do not blindly follow their religious leaders. The Damasos do not like it but I prefer it that way rather than the cultish nature of other denominations.

Anyway, that’s what we should look for among other so called religions, where are the wealth its members contributed gone? Politics, look at the mirror, who’s dictating every member to vote for certain candidates. Catholics? Celdran’s comments on Reason over Religion are the most unreasonable.

  • Jomex

Im sure there are more closet atheists in the Philippines but are afraid to come out because of peer pressure, family pressure, discrimination, employment reason, still living with their parents, etc. these people are reasonable people who just want a quiet life but are tired of religion telling them what to do. they are tired of the scandals of the Catholic church. they are sick and tired of being told that if you dont believe in god, you will go to hell. of course i am not in the position to tell them to come out now. they have to consider their personal reasons and circumstances before coming out as atheists. when I come out as atheist, I didnt change as a person, it was the same me but no longer believing in god. it was my friends and family that changed. they regarded me as evil, and going to hell. they have thought of evil things about me. so this is one reason why religion is poisonous to us because it is innately divisive. if you dont belong to them, they will hate you for it. they cant accept differences. they will treat everyone different as evil which is a funny way and contrary to being a Christian in the first place. remember Christianity is supposed to teach you love, right? so my message to those closeted atheists, yes, you are already good without god. and if you are capable of coming out now, tell the whole world about it. and be proud.

    • InChristAlone_75

Religion din ang atheism. Yung mga belief ng atheists na walang God, di ba you practice this religiously too in all aspect of your life?

Yes Christianity teaches love, it also teaches how to discipline people you love who go astray.

So would you proudly reveal your real name here and post a picture as well?

      • Jomex

its like telling kids “no, the world is not 6000 years old”. so im telling you too, no! atheism is not a religion! its like saying “not collecting stamps is a hobby”. its ridiculous if you keep telling yourself this mantra. but if that makes you happy and deluded, then go ahead.
Christianity teaches love, but love is not a Christian invention. Love is a human reality. Religon hijacked love to serve its purpose. Just like it hijacked the idea of morality.
When I say “proudly” i meant within his friends and family. I would NOT reveal my identity to you. you are religious fanatic, who knows you might kill me.

I watch these posts, from the position of a passive observer and I have noticed one thing, that many a commentator offer cut and paste observations, which are not even their own, it seems many do not have their own opinions, despite the claim their God gave them a brain to figure things out….. and there are few original thoughts, very few at all, just the endless blathering of those who claim to know everything and yet in reality know nothing at all.. I am not claiming I am wise in any sense, but I think
that simple realization i have makes me a bit wiser….

“Let me think….” yes that would be a good place to start, excellent idea, with you all the way on that one sweetie… Listen, try to understand, my comment was about people copying and pasting observations that were not of their own making, no original thought had gone into them at all. Genuine opinions? That doesn’t make sense, and I have no problems with peoples opinions but very often those opinions that are offered are not opinions at all. The endless pasting of Bible scripture a case in point…

According to the survey numbers, there are already 5.2 million Pinoys who consider themselves non-believers (100 million x 9.2% x 57%). Atheists like us should gently let our loved ones know our loss of faith. This is specially important to our younger relatives and friends. They have to have somebody to look up to who is not religious. There is no need to announce to the oldies and to the fundamentalists in the communities about our non-beliefs, but hinting about it to the next generation gives them the option to choose the path that we are taking, albeit too secretively.

People doesn`t have to leave the Church (Catholicism) and change their religion. There is a higher Gods than the priests and the CBCP who are all human beings. You can continue to pray to God and praying to God doesn`t need to be in the Church, blessing can still be gained through prayer even in the worst places you are in, and not in the comfort of the towering Church with gold, and idols, just ignore the priests…

    Three points:

    1. To consider leaving the Church because one doesn’t trust SOME (and I emphasize this word “some”) of its leaders is like saying you don’t wanna live in a democracy because of some bad apples in the government. You shouldn’t reject the entirety of the Church’s teachings just because of a few bad priests or because you don’t like some of those in its hierarchy.

    2. That people are considering leaving the Church is most likely a problem of ignorance, of people not seeking a deeper understanding of the faith. I doubt that people are really against the Church. Rather, I think some people are against WHAT THEY THINK is the Catholic Church (to indirectly quote an American bishop). As St. Augustine says, one must understand in order to believe, and conversely, one has to believe in order to understand. Faith should seek understanding.

    3. The problem with Catholics in the Philippines is that we’ve reduced the entire faith to a few pious practices without seeking further understanding of them or without really putting them to heart. Being a Catholic doesn’t mean just obeying the commandments, going to mass every Sunday, and occasionally going to confession. It means offering up one’s whole life in order to love and serve God, whether it be in one’s professional, academic, social, or family circumstances. It doesn’t mean compartmentalizing one’s prayer in a few Hail Marys or in the Sunday mass — it’s actually making one’s entire life a prayer in itself, making it a constant dialogue with God. Being a Catholic is to try to become Christ himself and to live as he lived.

    • indiosbravos2002

You can not blame people to equate priests and the CBCP as the church itself. Have you ever lived in a rural area? People there have only 1 priest all their lives. They see the priest as the embodiment of the church. If they see father getting close to a sacristan boy, going out with a lady or worst having children, the whole image crumbles and no matter how strong your faith is, you feel betrayed not by the priest but the church itself.

      • certainshadeofgreen

Precisely why we need more priests, and good ones too. And these priests need our prayers. I’m hoping Pope Francis could restore the Church’s image to these rural areas and enliven their faith. *fingers crossed*

    * * * * *
If anyone of our brighter congressmen would sponsor a bill to include as a mandatory subject in all college curricula the study of the “holy bible” (say, a 3 or 6-unit subject), not for devotional or religious purposes, but strictly as a historical course just like how our college students approach and study other subjects in history, literature, and mythology, I bet that the domestic representatives of the Roman Church will vehemently oppose the same.

Can anyone tell me why? Or better still, can anyone tell me why the local Roman Church or the CBCP itself has never pushed for the inclusion of such a subject in our colleges?

I have a guess. Perhaps, it is because the Roman Church knows well that it will further reduce the number of believers not only in these “bible-based” faiths, but in organized religion, in general. In short, the Roman Church wouldn’t like people learning and knowing what bible scholarship, especially in the last 200 years or so, has brought to light.

This should be a wake up call rather than a cause for making excuses. Reclusive institutions are always vulnerable to rot. This is why we demand public institutions like government and corporations to be transparent. The Catholic Church should do well to make its institutions more transparent so it may benefit from the dynamism of its members.

I left it in my heart since 10 years ago. Although I kept attending, my mind is somewhere else.Though working in ME made me compare both Christianity and Islam, the effect on me was different because reading both books made me realize that both are a load of BS. Though I helped convert 2 girls from INC to Catholicism, I found it funny that I myself couldn’t believe in it much. The Church has failed it’s people. Too many of its elders see fit to involve themselves too much on the politics of the land than to work with its people spiritual needs. On several occasions I had to leave a service because the sermon or the last messages by the priest became to colored with politics and left wing politics at that, one that I cannot equate much with my own ideology. The Church should take a hint from the Spanish civil war and see what happened to its priesthood during that era and how the people felt about them.

Isa lang ang pinang-hahawakan nila, sila ay napili ng Diyos, sila ay may direct channel sa Diyos at sila ang mas nakakaalam kung paano dapat tayo mamuhay para makamtan natin ang buhay na walang hanggan. yes i could consider that some of the clergy were indeed remiss of their vocation of shepherding the flock. Some could even be considered as sinful to the vocation. However, that is no reason for me to leave the church. Instead, I could help by extending my services, treasure, talent to the church. I have no part in the misdeeds of erring priests, It is for them to answer to the Creator. They are but just very few of the many. I’ll just include them in my prayers for them to be true to their vocation.
I believe that their is no intrusion being done into the role of the government. it is just their duty to guide and protect their flock.

He who had not sinned may throw the the first stone.

Very simple: Many followers of Jesus left because they cannot take [accept] his teachings anymore. In this case, it just shows, that truly indeed, the Catholic Church is the true Church founded by Christ.

No matter how many “damaso’s” the enemies of the Church would create, the words of Christ remain true and binding: “You are Peter, the rock, and upon this rock, I will build my Church, and even the gates of hell cannot prevail against it.”

  • johnlagrimas

But I know how surveys are paid for those self interested based individuals: The reality is – it’s the reverse.

In our parish, many have left their old life of sin and are reconciled with the Church because of our charismatic and holy parish priest. Even pastors of other sects came to visit and participate in our parochial fellowship. Except the Iglesia ni Cristo and Dating Daan who keep on maligning the priests and catholic believers – using the bible.

Those who separated themselves from the Church are usually the ones who are reluctant to renew their lives and hesitant to face the new challenges of the Catholic faith. It’s because to be a true Catholic does not only mean “feel good”, “praise and worship”, “dancing and singing” – but to live and practice the faith by imitating Christ – and that is difficult. No wonder, people who only want it easy and light prefer to be “born again” rather than to be a Catholic. But as it is said, without the crucified Christ, christians can be reduced into pagans.

As what St. Theresa of Avila said in her prayers [after all his sufferings and difficulties]: “My dear Lord, if this is how you treat your friends, no wonder you have only few”.

  • johnlagrimas

The Blessed Virgin Mary is the enemy of the “serpent” [it’s all over the bible, from Genesis to Revelation]. The saints’s lives are like the “living bible”, they were the holy ones who despite human weaknesses struggled and triumphed to be true witnesses of Christ, faithful to God’s word until the end of their lives – Saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary are heroes of faith and their examples, their prayers and inspiring lives lead us Catholics to holiness and to communion with God. Now, Satan could be so angry at this and at all times he’s willing to despise, dismiss and even erase the memories of saints and the blessed virgin in the minds and hearts of men.

So beware of those “self proclaiming christians” who are doing the same. We’ll just pray for them for their ignorance or if not, stubbornness of hearts.

Haha.

  • JosephNess

that’s the reason why God gave the people free will so that they can choose, whether they will be for God or against God…and, woe to those who are not wise and chose the other…

  • krizzibarra

“Filipinos are becoming a critical people and now slowly choosing reason over religion” so the filipino is not totally hopeless after all.

    • JosephNess

      not critical…they are only few…maybe lazy…

      • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

        *Sigh* Here we go again.

Can you explain why you call us who are irreligious “lazy”?

      • JosephNess

oh, you again…you a convert already, counting yourself as one of them? well, that’s good news…

      • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

Counting myself as one of them? What are you talking about? Can we please stay on topic? Please explain why you call those of us who have stepped away from religion “lazy”?

      • JosephNess

does this concern you? unless you’re catholic, this has nothing to do with you…the topic concerns catholic… please read aloud the topic above…

      • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

        Yes it concerns me because:

        1. I used to be Catholic.
        2. I’m interested in other people’s reason for leaving Catholicism.
        3. I’m interested in the spread of critical thinking in the Filipino people.
        4. This is an article published in a public website with a comments section where discussing the article is encouraged.

Now, can you explain why you say we who are irreligious are “lazy”? I’ve noticed that you NEVER stay on topic, preferring to throw in other issues without answering questions that you’re asked.

      • Guest

read the article again, you’ll find it there…

      • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

No. That is a deflection of the question. If you have any answers, please share them.

The question is: Why do you call us “lazy”?

  • alex_diaz2014

Leave, join other sect and be obliged to pay tithe? Me, I prefer to just refrain from making any donation to the Catholic church as a sign of protest… hehe

    • Crazy_horse101010

ive belonged to other sects in america and never one time was i asked to give ten percent they passed around the plate and you gave what you wanted to give. nobody was obliged to do give anything hee hee

    • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

      Or:

      Leave. Period.

  • calixto909

How about the converts and being baptized? Slanted journalism bent to misguide and misinform the public. Whatever evil motive one has, the catholic church shall remain stronger as always

    • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

That’s interesting. What are the statistics of conversions to Catholicism?

  • elmersvd

There are many reasons why there are people who are leaving the Catholic Church or whether why the percentage of mass attendance are so few. However, the focus of the Catholic Church in the Philippines is firstly to accept this fact and try to take a good and hard look on itself why this is happening. And for the CBCP to deny the results of this survey is very very unfortunate. They are looking for the fact that churches are full and standing room only. But if that church has only one mass or two, of course most probably it will be full. If there are at least 75% of all Filipino Catholics are attending weekly mass, it mean that there must be more than 58 million who are going to Church every week. Can we really say that this is true?

  • buttones

If we were to access social commentary, anywhere in the world, it would be only in PH one could find this trash, people blathering on about their Gods. Please grow up PH, get a life will you, it is not so hard,it is not so difficult, just grow up little children, and grow up ok?

  • pipsirho

Religion or religious belief is never a subject of survey, debate, or popularity, let us respect the preferences of people! Should it happen that there is indeed a Day of Final Judgment, let us COMPARE NOTES when that time comes, and SEE WHERE LIES the TRUTH!!! Who would be with the herd of sheep, and those with the herd of goat!

    • http://songsofthesalamander.blogspot.com/ Randy Q. Villanueva

How is talking about a religion disrespectful of that religion?

  • patukar

Kalaban kasi nila ngaun simbahan. Abangan susunod na kabanata ng Abnoy adminitrasyon!

  • mapicchu

up to now, am still disappointed that the simbang gabi no.1’s sermon was the cbcp circulated essay of msgr villegas- “contraception is corruption”. kainis. i didnt return for any more simbang gabi after that. they/cbcp should be more sensitive to feelings of churchgoers. we go to mass to hear the word of God…not to be bombarded by the opinions of these priests on matters not related to the gospel for the day.

  • nano

Dont surprise me , and the trend will go on. The church must rethink their strategy and stop the hypocracy of some church leaders.

  • Rolly257

The reason why one abandons a ship is because the captain leading it is screwed as hell. :U Either that or masyado nang pakarag-karag yung barko.

Masyado kung mampulitika, (Even though Church and State cannot tamper with each other) Unapologetic pa kung may scandal (Yeah, did you know that some dioceses ship their molester priest/nuns to other discreet dioceses/seminaries to ‘repent’. Only, mas dumadami biktima nila.) Not to mention, kala mo kung sino almighty and powerful na kaya kang patungan ng Excommunication.

    /facepalm/

With the dawn of cultural enlightenment, IBA NA PO ANG MEANING NG NORMAL. As a woman, I find it incomprehensible that they condemn women who use contraceptives. Once again, contraceptives are there to improve health. Not only that, kung ikaw, pipiliin, mas gusto mo; magkaroon ng anak na di mo kayang buhayin? (financial & social support.) O have a choice to not have one. (Since di pa kaya ng bulsa mo.) Parang ganito lang yan eh, Murder by abortion or murder by making a living hell out of the child’s life.

Which are both morally frowned upon.

You know, I’m sick and tired of our Church, meddling in the affairs of the state. LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE, FOR GOODNESS’ SAKE.

    /facepalm/

Why am I seeing the Roman Empire again?

  • imongredneck

If only that sentiment againsts the church is the same against the crooked politicians, this country would be in a much greater shape.

  • Islander

Fr. Quitorio’s questioning the sampling survey and rebutting it with his “observations on the ground” exposed his ignorance about the scientific support of this statistical tool and his reliance on anecdotal “proofs” instead. The Catholic Church will be better served by a spokesman who would not sound anti-Science.

  • Filpino

akoy isang aktibong katoliko, ibig sabihin di lang

    ng mga katoliko, tulad ng;

    1. Mga imahe at Krus
    2. Pakikialam ng mga Pari o simbahan sa pulitika
    3. Bakit di ko kabisado ang mga talata sa biblya
    4. Pangre rape ng mga pari
    5. Totoo ba ang gawi ng mga katoliko sa pagsamba sa Diyos.

    natuklasan ko;

There are two God Head presently revealed in the Bible. God the Father and God the Son, Jesus Christ, and they are one:

      – – – “”In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. . . . And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14)

      – – – “”No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. (John 1:18)

      – – – “”All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. (Matt 11:27)

      – – – “”that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We
      are one: (John 17:21-22)

Lack of Faith, Disgust of Clergy Men and Women, Need of guidance, Need a upbeat environment – Protestants do this for living(creating micro-economy). Eventually after thier generation the universal church still stands…. you can talk and comment about how bad the catholic church is… bottom line is who are you are worshiping. The term lost sheep is always been there… in our era – commercialism just got the best handle of it…. after all there is money and power to it. Tithing and donations must go somewhere – either ones pocket or group of pocket, it a shift of wealth and whose common good is benefiting it…Props and nice songs and jumping up and down, talks about triumphs in life, how atheist presents that life without GOD is great afterall – they know a trick – the end their near end, one can still confess and just remember to confess before your life of earth ends and they will be forgiven no questions asks.

  • bisdakis

The survey just shows that religious ignorance of the Filipinos is declining. It’s bad for the Roman Catholic but it’s good for the Filipinos and the country as a whole!

    • PhilippineSalt

Really? You should say, the “1” of 11 are becoming softies and wusses and ka-gagohan factor of the “1” is on the rise… Mom and Pa cannot instill their way of life dahil this is new generation. Survey also shows how slow the 1 of 11 gets it…. meaning 10 got it right – the “1” just turned chicken or became aware the he can do anything and no one would even blink an eye of whatever he does – good or bad… in other words – kulang sa pansin.

Mangahas is a known supporter of RH and he even tried to persuade Kit Tatad to go slow against RH for the sake of Tatad’s political career but Tatad of course refused. celdran is also a promoter of RH. Father Tabora is also open to RH. This survey therefore of RH by SWS which is owned by Mangahas is most probably a propaganda of the RH lobby.

Religion is just religion. It is your thirst to find God that will lead your heart to find it. Usually we use our minds to explain or to understand God. Just how can someone with limited mind like anyone understand someone that is infinite like God. 2Cor 5:7 says we walk by faith and not by sight…Mat 7:7 Seek and you shall find, knock at it shall be opened, ask and you shall receive….and Mat 6:33 says Seek Yeah first the Kingdom of God and all His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you…..U can use all religions if u like, u can read all self help and inspirational books and the Bible will connect them all. But first have faith, have humility, know obedience…surely God will open up to you. He said so and He did to whoever seeks Him. Just believe!!

There are many Catholics in the Philippines, but there are only a few that reallyyyy believe and adhere strictly to what they teach.

All those kids you see in the nightclubs? I’d bet 90% of those are Catholic. Yet, they’re there drinking and grinding and getting naked. I’m sure Boy Abunda and Vice Ganda are Catholic, yet they’re homosexual, something the Church absolutely does not approve of. All of the corrupt officials in this country, I’d bet most of them are Catholic, doesn’t stop them from stealing from the country

  • noypinga

  • rlo

I’d encourage everyone to leave religion altogether but many need something to hold-on to. I didn’t leave the Church because of any sort of religious or anti-religious reasons. I don’t see its relevance in my life anymore and you know what…..leaving religion made me see things in a different light altogether. Besides, the CBCP is so fixated on how it exists within the countries political machinations than it is concerned with the people spiritual needs.

  • floroy

i’m not shocked by the result of the survey. have been in R.C. organizations in my place of residence, of the 3 parish priests we have been under, 2 are not that centered on evangelization especially to Catholics who have been long disconnected with regular church life and practices. what they are most concerned about are fundraisings for the church building which are the central topic of our meetings, or food to be served at the convent for certain church occasions and anniversaries and birthdays of priests which we are required to contribute. Our present parish priest is new and we do not know yet how he will run the parish.

  • boybakal

One in 11 considers leaving Catholic Church….

    Probably true.
But who cares….We don’t want that kind of Catholics only by name.
They can go everywhere they want and join other congregation and have their little earnings taxed by 10%.
At least in Catholics, give what you can afford….not compulsory but with open heart.
