PFF chief Araneta says Cebu may host AFC President’s Cup group stage in May

Cebu is set to host more international football matches, hopefully starting with the group stage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President’s Cup on  May 2 to 12.

This was announced by Philippine Football Federation (PFF) president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta, who graced last night’s Cebu Football Association (CFA) General Assembly held at the Oakridge Pavilion along A.S. Fortuna Street in Mandaue City.

Araneta said the PFF will be getting a confirmation of its hosting bid for one of the three group stages anytime this week.

The draw for the group stage is today. Nepal will host one of the groups from May 7 to 11.

“They have assured us that we have a good chance,” Araneta told members of the local press in an interview right after the general assembly.

It will be the first time that Philippines will be fielding a team in this tournament after the AFC approved its participation. The Philippines will be represented by the Global FC, the champion of the 2012 United Football League (UFL) Division 1.

In line with this, Araneta said he hopes the Cebu City Sports Center pitch will immediately be rehabilitated. He expressed confidence that the CFA will be able to get it in shape in time the same as when it hosted the Faceoff that pitted the Philippine Azkals versus the Singapore Lions last November.

This year will be the 9th edition of the AFC President’s Cup, which started in 2005. It is the club version of the AFC’s Challenge Cup.

Araneta also said that Cebu will get to host another friendly match for the Philippine Azkals perhaps in June probably against Vietnam.
