Japan scrambles fighters for China plane

TOKYO – Japan scrambled eight fighter jets on Thursday after a Chinese state-owned plane breached its airspace for the first time, over islands at the centre of a dispute between Tokyo and Beijing.

It was the first incursion by a Chinese state aircraft into Japanese airspace anywhere since the country’s military began monitoring in 1958, the defense ministry said.

The move marks a ramping-up of what observers suggest is a Chinese campaign to create a “new normal” — where its forces come and go as they please around islands which Beijing calls the Diaoyus, but Tokyo controls as the Senkakus.

It also comes as ceremonies mark the 75th anniversary of the start of the Nanjing Massacre, when Japanese Imperial Army troops embarked on an orgy of violence and killing in the then-Chinese capital.

F-15 jets were mobilized after a Chinese Maritime Surveillance aircraft ventured over the islands just after 11 am (0200 GMT), Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters.

“It was a fixed-wing Y-12 aeroplane belonging to the Chinese State Oceanic Administration. We confirmed that this aeroplane flew in our country’s airspace,” he said.

“It is extremely regrettable. We will continue to resolutely deal with any act violating our country’s sovereignty, in accordance with domestic laws and regulations.”

The Y-12 is a twin-turboprop.

Japan mobilized eight F-15 jets and an E2C early-warning aircraft, the Asahi Shimbun reported, citing a defence ministry source. But the incident appeared to have passed off without any direct confrontation.

In Beijing, China’s foreign ministry termed the flight as normal.

“China’s maritime surveillance plane flying over the Diaoyu islands is completely normal,” said spokesman Hong Lei.

“China requires the Japanese side to stop illegal activities in the waters and airspace of the Diaoyu islands,” Hong said, adding they were “China’s inherent territory since ancient times”.

The coastguard said its regular patrol had spotted the plane.

“At about 11:06 am today (Thursday), a patrol boat from the Japan Coast Guard confirmed the flight of a fixed-wing aeroplane, which belongs to the Chinese Oceanic Administration, in our country’s airspace around Uotsuri Island. It was confirmed at a point about 15 kilometres south of Uotsuri,” said a statement.

“The patrol boat immediately informed the fixed-wing aircraft: ‘Fly without intruding into our country’s airspace’. It replied to the effect that ‘this is China’s airspace’.”

The State Oceanic Administration is part of the Ministry of Land and Resources. Its roles include law enforcement in Chinese waters.

Chinese government ships have moved in and out of waters around the islands for more than two months, but there have been no reports of any airborne action.

Four maritime surveillance vessels were logged there earlier in the day, the coast guard said, adding it had ordered them to leave.

Such confrontations have become commonplace since Japan nationalised the East China Sea islands in September, a move it insisted amounted to nothing more than a change of ownership of what was already Japanese territory.

But Beijing reacted with fury, with observers saying the riots that erupted across China had at least tacit backing from the Communist Party government.

China says 300,000 civilians and soldiers died in a spree of killing, rape and destruction in the six weeks after the Japanese military entered Nanjing on December 13, 1937.

Some foreign academics put the number of deaths lower, including China historian Jonathan Spence who estimates that 42,000 soldiers and citizens were killed and 20,000 women raped, many of whom later died.

China did it again.  What can the world really expect from that country?  Hegemony? Proving that they have become rich and can do all things.  That is not good.  All things come to an end.  The wealth will one day disappear as history always repeats itself.  Other countries become rich but do not bully its neighbors.  If the basis of ownership is history, then there shall not be North and South Korea.  We must learn to respect internaional laws, not insist on historical ownership.  Come on….

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/THRDK7REM6N5UL6NUSLE5FOHBI angogay

Japan had all these years was the second largest economy but the Japanese did not use their wealth to bully weaker and poorer countries.  For the first time, China overtook Japan as the second largest economy.  Now look at what the Chinese are doing.  People of world, wait and see what China will do when they overtake the United States.  At the least the US has compassion and they help poor countries.

The current world affairs has been shaped-up by individual or collaborative effort of countries with stable politics, mighty military and plenty of cash and technology to keep up their dominance and protect their interest, in the name of freedom, human rights, religion and national patrimony. Do you think Philippines or even you as normal Filipino citizen, if given a chance to lead this country at whatever current level of knowledge you have, will ever sit down and rest at your laurels and leave your national interest fix for itself have you had those elements as mentioned above? Definitely no, as politics is governed by human beings, and human beings are governed by their emotions and level of greed, there is no way we can say we don’t want to be aligned with or be within  the sphere of influence with the bigger mighty superpowers. Its just a matter of choice my friend, whether we choose the Unstable, Confused & Manipulative Corrupted China as a challenger or the Struggling Overstretched and Self Vested Interest US with no in between. Its a choice from either of the two to protect our national interest, while we work how to fix our domestic problems compounded by the international and cross border events in a globalized world of economics and distribution of resources.

Let us not be too leftist in our views but rather focus on a bigger picture and make our choice..by that, we do a service to our country if we think along that way as we are not encapsulated by this current world order……

There may be a lot of countries who doesn’t like US, but in reality, the World would prefer a US or West dominated world as compare to a Chinese or Communist one. The US gives back to the world WAAAY MORE than the Chinese could ever dream of, the Chinese only think of themselves when it comes to this kind of matter, what they want is to only take, take, take. The US takes and give back. And oh, surely, the world will never allow a country notorious on pollution, drug trafficking, human rights violation, animal cruelty, terrible counterfeiting in the name of money and totally neglects health safety, I could go on, to dominate let alone get to the level of the West. It will never happen. Dragon they say? China only has “quantity” but they so lack “quality.” A country with no quality will never rule or dominate this world.

I support Japan to re-arm herself with known reserve of plutonium grade nuke materials they stored in the UK alone to build 7500 nuclear missiles just one can level Peking city, this will surely maintain peace and give assurance that China will restrain itself ( I like to call her it, since it is a dragon with black motive) to launch a first strike if there is an ability for Japan to deliver a mutual assured destruction of China. I support Japan to remove her pacifist clause in their constitution and place more of these nuke in their ultra quiet submarines spread out in the sea, I strongly support them to develop their ultra-modern aircraft carrier with robots managing its defenses, navigation and its local air traffic. When that happens they can actually help the filipinos to build up her self-defenses more and assure us also of their protective nuclear umbrella, but the Philippines must develop her own as our contribution to the allied countries against China`s increasingly frequent bullying…Japan should one day force any Chinese airplane violating their airspace to teach this bully a lesson of its own making if they continue to ignore Japan`s warning and force land it in their country and apprehend the pilot to show China that they mean business, the same with their maritime vessels and let use see how China will react to a confident, self-assertive but battle tested Japan.

This is how to defend our sovereignty folks — scramble 10 fighter jets at a time and fire missles immediately, apologize later. Your territorial integrity is already being raped, and you still play nice?  No! This should be our minimum response too. Anything less is a disservice and lack of real love to country and to the Filipino people.

    • PHtaxpayer

Uh, hello!  We don’t even have a single fighter jet in our air force, if you could call it that.  Besides even if we had 10 or 20 modern fighter jets, that still wouldn’t be enough as China has the 2nd largest military in the world.  They want us to fire first so they can pulverize us and say we were the aggressors.

And don’t say we need the Americans because, if you recall from history, the US surrendered the Philippine Islands to the Japanese Imperial Army in 1942.  The US would love to use the PH as an FOB or forward operating base as a buffer to their Pacific base in Hawaii – sacrifice the PH so the US can mobilize for war, if it goes to war with China.  But it is not in the US interest to go to war with their largest economic partner.

The PH has to play its card well given our geopolitical position and economic security.  We cannot afford our security by going to war with another superpower or allow the PH as a battleground among superpowers – that’s just plain stupid.

Both China and Japan have enough nukes to destroy each other many times over.  The first chinese overflight was a test by an unarmed recon plane to determine the kind of Japanese response – and it shows how determined the Japanese to defend its territory in the disputed East China Sea.

Many observers believe that a shooting war between the two is unlikely at the moment but the incident may spark a new wave of nationalism among the post-war Japanese citizens and may force them to full-scale rearmament.
