Cop dies during training
A 39-year-old police officer died at the National Capital Region Training Center in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, on Wednesday. Police Staff Sergeant Victorino Oriero Jr. had completed only the first of the 12-week public safety junior leadership course (PSJLC) when he died of cardiac arrest, said Police Col. Alexander Santos, the Taguig police chief. Oriero was last assigned at Police Community Precinct 3 in the city. Investigation showed that Oriero and his classmates were running inside the police camp at 5:50 a.m. when he suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the ground. He was rushed to Parañaque Doctors Hospital but was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m. Asked if Oriero had any health problems, Santos said that trainees were required to submit a medical certificate to ensure their fitness for the program. The PSJLC is a mandatory course for police officers, “[providing] them with the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for effective and efficient handling of junior key positions in the [police] units.” In August, another policeman drowned in the camp’s swimming pool while undergoing the basic insurgency special operation course. —Dexter Cabalza
