MANILA, Philippines—Thousands of volunteers are expected to form a sea of red as they run for humanity in the Philippine Red Cross’ biggest running event in its 64 years of humanitarian service.

“Run for Humanity” led by Red Cross chair Richard J. Gordon will start at 7 a.m. Sunday in Metro Manila and in other key cities of the country.

There will be three race routes in the metropolis. The Manila route will start at the corner of Roxas Boulevard and Quirino Avenue to the Cultural Center of the Philippines complex.

The Parañaque route will start at Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard corner MIA Road and run to Coral Avenue.

All runs in Metro Manila will converge on the SM Mall of Asia where a program led by Gordon and other personalities will be held. Prizes will be given to the National Capital Region chapter, school and barangay with the biggest delegations.

Prizes also await the youngest and oldest runners and a raffle will also be held using the runners’ numbers.

Gordon, who conceptualized the run, said it is aimed at highlighting the heroic role of volunteers and in celebration of the United Nations Declaration of 2011 as the International Year of Volunteers.

The run also hopes to create a culture of volunteerism in the country and make the Philippines the volunteer capital of the world, he said.
