Suspect in Ombudsman exec slay case shot dead after ‘grabbing cop’s gun’

The suspect in the killing of Ombudsman Assistant Special Prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag was killed on Saturday after he allegedly grabbed the gun of a police escort inside Camp Karingal in Quezon City.

Quezon City Police District Office (QCPD) director Chief Supt. Joselito Esquivel said that Angelito Avenido Jr. was being taken to the second floor of the police headquarters in Camp Karingal for proper documentation when the incident happened.

Report said Avenido was about to undergo booking procedure before he would be transferred to the Quezon City Jail when he dashed to get hold of the service firearm of his police escort.

Esquivel said that Avenido and the policeman grappled for the firearm leading to the shooting of the suspect.

“Ang report po sa amin at prino-process na sila, fini-finger print, ginagayak na palabas na, yung isang pulis natin ay inagawan, so nagpanggulo sila doon sa baril at natamaan itong si Angelito Avenido,” Esquivel said in an interview with dzBB.

Avenido was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

Avenido was the suspect in the killing of Tanyag, who died on June 4 after suffering from stab wounds.
