Ex-CJ Sereno’s high school ‘saddened’ by ouster
Quezon City High School hosted on Monday the “2018 Balik Eskwela” program of the Department of Education (DepEd) to mark the first day of classes of school year 2018-2019.
As of June 2018, this school along Scout Ybardaloza Street, Diliman, Quezon City is home to more than 3,000 students in junior high school and senior high school.
Interestingly, the school was also a training ground of ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno during her teenage years.
Ms. Janet Dionio, principal of Quezon City High School, said that Sereno graduated from the school with honors in 1976.
After high school, Sereno took up economics at Ateneo de Manila University and then studied afterwards at the University of the Philippines College of Law. She passed the bar and officially became a lawyer in 1984.
Like Sereno, Dionio said that most of the ousted chief magistrate’s fellow graduates became lawyers.

Asked about what they felt about Sereno’s ouster from the Supreme Court, Dionio said the teachers felt “saddened.”
“Of course, we’re saddened. We don’t know what really happened behind all those problems. The school was really saddened, but life has to go on,” Dionio lamented.
Aside from Sereno, Dionio said many of the school’s alumni have also been in top government positions.
“Many of our alumni have been in top government posts, but one of the most prominent personalities was CJ Sereno,” Dionio said.
The principal said that acting Interior Secretary Eduardo Año and former Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency director General Arturo Cacdac were also part of the school’s alumni.
What the school appreciates about its alumni, Dionio said, was that they always come back and check up on them.
Some of the school alumni’s projects were the construction of school’s computer laboratories and a 150-seater audio-visual room.
