Hugyawan festival to feature ‘carnivals of the world’

NEGRENSES can look forward to a display of global street dancing as the Negros Oriental State University (Norsu) in Dumaguete City prepares to roll out its Hugyawan Festival on Dec. 3.

Joy Perez, Norsu information officer, said this year’s Hugyawan will feature the various carnivals of the world.

“This is to show a spectacular parade of colorful costumes, festivities, humorous gimmicks and merrymaking in the streets of Dumaguete,” said Perez.

Hugyawan, a Cebuano word taken from “hugyaw” or revelry, is the annual festival held to culminate Norsu’s Founder’s Day celebration.

This year, the festival will mark the 84th Founder’s Day of the only state university in Negros Oriental.

The activities will start on Nov. 28.

Dr. Peter Dayot, overall chairman for this year’s celebration, said each competing contingent from the university’s colleges and departments will present a certain carnival of a particular country.

Perez said a total of 14 contingents will dance on the streets.

The contingents and the country they will represent are College of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences (Sakela Festival of Nepal), College of Business and Accountancy (Carnivaldel Pueblo of London), Norsu Siaton campus (Sinulog de Cebu-Philippines), College of Maritime Education (Masskara-Philippines), College of Industrial Technology (Grand Cañao Adivay Festival-Philippines), Norsu Mabinay campus (GOA Carnival-India), College of Agriculture and Forestry (El Callao Carnival-Venezuela), College of Education (Carnival of Venice-Italy), College of Engineering and Architecture (Carnival de Baranquilla-Colombia), Norsu Guihulngan campus (Cardinal de Nice-France), Norsu Bayawan-Sta. Catalina campus (Carnival de Oruro-Bolivia), Norsu Bais City campuses 1 and 2 (Royaume enchate de la France/Varikai Festival-France), College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (Carnival del Rio-Brazil), and College of Arts and Sciences (Caribbean Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago).
