INQUIRER bags gold for best Page 1 design

The Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Sunday edition featuring President Duterte’s first year in office bagged the gold medal for best newspaper front page design in the prestigious Asian Media Awards on Wednesday.
The front page of the Inquirer’s June 25, 2017, issue carried the lead story, “Duterte Year 1: Shock And Awe.” The report about President Duterte’s policies and initiatives during his first year was accompanied by a portrait of the President by illustrator Rene Elevera.
The Inquirer’s associate art director, Elizalde Pusung, received the award, the first win for the Inquirer in the front page design category.
The silver and bronze medals for Newspaper Front Page Design went to Galadari Printing & Publishing of Dubai and Sing Tao Daily of Hong Kong.

The winners of the 17th Asian Media Awards were presented by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-Ifra) at this year’s Publish Asia conference.
WAN-Ifra is the global organization of the world’s newspapers and news publishers representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and more than 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries.
This year’s awards gathered 435 entries submitted by 58 media companies from Asian and Middle Eastern countries. There were 39 winners in different categories.
The Inquirer also won three major awards in the Asian Media Awards in 2017, including a bronze medal for its redesign initiative “MyInquirer” in the best in newspaper marketing category.
The photograph “Savior to Street Oldies” by Inquirer photographer Lyn Rillon bagged the gold medal in the best feature photography category, while Raffy Lerma’s “Lamentation” won the silver medal for best news photography.
The Pieta-like photograph by Lerma shows a woman cradling the body of her husband, who was killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen—one of the thousands of unresolved cases in Mr. Duterte’s war on drugs.
Viral photo
Lerma’s viral photo was also recognized in other international publishing forums in the past year.
In February 2017, the Society for News Design awarded Lerma a silver for “Lamentation” and another silver for his photo series “Dead serious.”
Four months later, Lerma’s “Lamentation” was named best news photograph of 2016 by the Society of Publishers in Asia.
