Russian envoy’s remarks on nuke plant the truth – bishop

Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos is urging the Duterte administration to put to rest any hopes of reviving the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) in Morong town.

In a statement, Santos said Russian Ambassador to the Philippines Igor Khovaev’s remarks last week — that the nuclear plant was beyond revival because of its “outdated technology”—was a reminder that there was no chance for the reopening of the 32-year-old plant.

“The ambassador validates our position. We were right ever since about BNPP. There is no point and no reason to rehabilitate it. The BNPP is just a colossal monument [to] man’s greed, model of graft and corruption,” Santos said.

Khovaev’s remarks came after Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corp. conducted an assessment of the facility in 2017. —Julie M. Aurelio
