6 killed, 7 hurt in Zamboanga del Norte blast

ZAMBOANGA CITY – At least six persons were killed while seven others were hurt in an explosion in Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte on Wednesday.

Police said the details were scant but the initial report was that the explosion took place at a house inside the Dacon plantation in the hinterland village of Guban.

Zamboanga del Norte Police Director Sr. Supt. Raul Tacaca said they received the report about the explosion around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He said the chief of the Sirawai Plywood Lumber Corp. had informed police that one worker found a mortar shell and brought it inside his bunkhouse.

Citing a report, Tacaca said the mortar shell exploded for still unclear reasons and killed about half a dozen people and wounded seven others.                    /kga
