BAGUIO CITY — The new year brought back the chill to this mountain city when the mercury dropped to 12.2°C on Monday, Jan. 1.

The cold spell was 2 degrees lower than the early morning temperature on Dec. 31, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration station here.

Efren Dalipog, weather observer, said the coldest day last month was on Dec. 16 when the mercury dipped to 11.5°C. But the temperature climbed again to an average of 15 and 16 degrees until Dec. 30 when it slid to 12.7 degrees, he said.

Dalipog said Monday’s chill was caused by a low pressure area and the northeast monsoon. He said colder mornings and nights were expected until February. —Gobleth Moulic
