Government workers are going to have a longer holiday break with Malacañang suspending  work on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2.

The work suspension under Memorandum Circular No. 37 covers government offices, including government-owned and -controlled corporations, government financial institutions, state universities and colleges, local government units, and other agencies and instrumentalities.

The circular, signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, was meant “to give employees of the government full opportunity to celebrate the holidays with their families and loved ones.”

But the suspension does not cover government agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, responses to disasters and calamities, and other vital services.

Malacañang left it up to the other branches of government, independent commissions and bodies, and the private sector if they want to suspend work on these dates as well.

Since Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Mondays, the work suspension will give government workers a four-day weekend.
