/ 05:17 AM August 02, 2017

Monte de Piedad, the oldest savings bank in the country, was inaugurated on Aug. 2, 1882.

It was founded by Fr. Felix Huertas of the Franciscan Order using funds from obras pias.

In 1894, the bank and pawnshop moved from Intramuros to Plaza Goiti (now Plaza Lacson) in Sta. Cruz, Manila. The bank was bought out in 1997. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
