Did You Know: The Ayuntamiento

/ 12:04 AM June 28, 2017

The first session of the Ayuntamiento, a Spanish colonial administrative council, was held in Manila on June 28, 1571, at Casas Consitoriales, considered the equivalent of today’s City Hall.

The Ayuntamiento stood witness to the signing of the terms of the capitulation of Manila between American and Spanish forces.

The building was destroyed during Liberation in February 1945 and rebuilt in 2013.

The Bureau of Treasury now holds office in that building in Intramuros. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
