Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ronald dela Rosa on Monday confirmed a terrorist threat to kidnap tourists in Central Visayas but assured the public that the police had taken the necessary steps to protect vacationers from terror attacks.

Dela Rosa said the PNP also monitored the threat which led the US Embassy to issue a travel advisory on Sunday warning that there was “unsubstantiated yet credible information” that terrorist groups may attempt to conduct kidnappings in Central Visayas, particularly in both Cebu and Bohol provinces.

In its travel advisory, the embassy said extremists “have targeted sporting events, theaters, markets, mass transportation systems—including airlines, and other public venues where large crowds gather.”

Dela Rosa said the PNP had prepared to face the threat.

“I am giving assurance to the people that our policemen in Central Visayas are ready so don’t be afraid to go to these places,” he said in a press briefing.

Dela Rosa said he was briefed by the Central Visayas regional police director, Chief Supt. Noli Taliño, on the terrorist threat.

“Just don’t take that route that goes to the boundary of the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia where the Abu Sayyaf frequently conducts its kidnappings,” Dela Rosa said.
