Army seizes NPA camp, high-powered firearms in Mati City

The Army seized high-powered firearms and overran a rebel camp in Davao Oriental on Thursday, the military said.
Soldiers from the 28th Infantry Battalion (IB) clashed with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Sitio DP Line, Barangay Calapagan, Mati City, at about 6 a.m., acting chief of the 10th Infantry Division public affairs office Captain Alexandre Cabales said.

The soldiers recovered two M653 ‘baby armalite’ rifles, one M14 rifle, war material, and personal belongings after the encounter with the NPA’s Pulang Bagani Company 6 (PCB 6).
After the firefight, the soldiers discovered a rebel camp, a temporary harbor site that can accommodate about 40 communist rebels.
Article continues after this advertisementThursday’s encounter was the third between the 28th IB and communists of PBC 6 since March 30, with no reported casualties on the government side. The rebels suffered an undetermined number of casualties.

The government and communists have signed an interim joint ceasefire agreement during the recently concluded fourth round of peace talks in The Netherlands, but the military leadership said it would continue its operations until the guidelines and ground rules for the declaration of a bilateral ceasefire were approved.
