LUCENA CITY – Three fishers were arrested by authorities in Padre Burgos town in Quezon province after they were caught using banned fine mesh nets, locally known as “buli-buli,” inside a prohibited area in Tayabas Bay on Saturday, police said Sunday.

Report said a team of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) law enforcers and local police policemen caught Ruel Mamac, Arturo Villaceran and Christian Besas, all residents of Barangay (village) Dalahican in Lucena City, while fishing off the shores of Barangay Lipata.

The method of using buli-buli in fishing has been banned by BFAR since 2013 because it destroys corals, sea grasses and traps, and eventually kills small fish.

The suspects are detained at Padre Burgos police jail.  SFM/rga
