Today is the 115th birth anniversary of President Carlos P. Garcia. The vice president during the Magsaysay presidency, he took over as the country’s chief executive when Magsaysay died in a plane crash in March 1957. He was elected president in November of the same year. Garcia was popular for his “Filipino First” policy, which put the interests of the Filipino people above those of foreigners and of the ruling party. He died on June 14, 1971, after suffering a heart attack.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
