SWS: Duterte satisfaction ‘very good’ but 51% say cursing could harm PH

President Rodrigo Duterte’s net satisfaction rating for the fourth quarter of 2016 is still “very good,” the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed.

Duterte’s net satisfaction is at a “very good” +63 for December from +64 in September.

The SWS classifies net satisfaction rating of +70 and above as “excellent,” +50 to +69 as “very good, +30 to +49 as “good,” +10 to +29 as “moderate,” +9 to -9 as “neutral,” -10 to -29 as “poor”” -30 to -49 as “bad,” -50 to -69 as “very bad,” -70 and below as “execrable.”

The poll, conducted from December 3 to 6 among 1,500 adults, shows that 77 percent (from 76 percent last quarter) of respondents were satisfied with the performance of the President. Ten percent (from 13 percent) were undecided while 13 percent (from 11 percent) were dissatisfied.

The survey has sampling error margins of ±3% for national percentages, ±4% for Balance Luzon, and ±6% each for Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao.

The same SWS survey also asked respondents if they think “Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s habit of publicly cursing foreign or international officials whom he does not like is harmful to the relations of the Philippines with the countries or institutions of those officials.”

More than half or 51 percent of respondents agreed that it might be harmful to the Philippines while 33 percent disagreed. Seventeen percent were undecided.

Among the foreign leaders and organizations cursed or criticized by Duterte are US President Barack Obama, the European Union, and the United Nations.

Satisfaction highest in Mindanao, youth

The President net satisfaction rating in Mindanao is still the highest among all geographical areas at +74 (82 percent satisfied, 8 percent dissatisfied, 9 percent undecided) although it fell from +85 last September.

His net satisfaction rating for the other areas remain almost the same with +61 (76 percent satisfied, 15 percent dissatisfied, 8 percent undecided) in Visayas, +59 (75 percent satisfied, 16 percent dissatisfied, 9 percent undecided) in the National Capital Region, and +60 for the rest of Luzon (74 percent satisfied, 14 percent dissatisfied, 12 percent undecided).

Duterte’s  net satisfaction is higher in urban areas at +66 (79 percent satisfied, 13 percent dissatisfied, 9 percent undecided) compared to rural areas at +61 (75 percent satisfied, 14 percent dissatisfied, 11 percent undecided).

Among socioeconomic classes, net satisfaction was highest for Class D (+64 or 77 percent satisfied, 13 percent dissatisfied and 10 percent undecided), followed by Class E (+61 or 74 percent satisfied, 13 percent dissatisfied and 13 percent undecided) and finally ABC (+52 or 73 percent satisfied, 21 percent dissatisfied and 6 percent undecided).

Net satisfaction was also highest among those aged 18 to 24 (+70) and those who graduated from college (+72).
