TAGUM CITY, Philippines—A suspected New People’s Army rebel was killed while two soldiers were wounded in a clash in Trento, Agusan del Sur late Tuesday, military and police officials said Wednesday.

Weapons, including an improvised bomb, were also recovered following the 3:40 p.m. encounter in New Visayas village, according to Superintendent Martin Gamba, spokesperson of the Caraga police.

Major Eugenio Julio Osias IV, spokesperson of the military’s 4th Infantry Division based in Cagayan de Oro City, said soldiers from the Army’s 75th Infantry Battalion were on combat operation when they chanced upon an undetermined number of gunmen believed to be NPA rebels.

He said the firefight lasted for about 20 minutes before the rebels withdrew.
