Angry man divorces wife shortly after wedding over phone chat

/ 03:07 PM May 23, 2016

A sulking Saudi groom divorced his bride shortly after their wedding because she ignored him as she continued to chat with her friends on her mobile phone.

According to Emirati news site Gulf News, which cited Saudi news site Al Watan, the groom escorted his wife to the hotel where they were booked after the joyous wedding last week.

“However, as soon as the bride was in the room, she kept using her mobile. Her groom tried to get closer to her and become more intimate, but he was shocked when she ignored him, not responding to his words and action. When he asked her about the reasons, she answered she was busy communicating with her friends who were congratulating her on her marriage on the mobile. The groom asked her to delay the messages, but she refused and became angry. When he asked her if her friends were more important than he was, the bride answered that they were,” a relative who spoke to the local news site said.

Due to his irritation and anger, the groom exclaimed that he would file for a divorce and stormed out of the hotel. A Saudi court brought the case to the reconciliation committee, but the groom insisted on having the divorce.

Ahmad Al Maabi, a Saudi legal expert, was reported to have warned the public on the rising number of divorce cases among young couples.

“Misunderstandings, differences in views and the easy approach to marriage without a deep appreciation of the responsibilities are among the major causes of divorce among young people. Marriages are bound to fail when there are no robust foundations or trust.” Al Maabi said. Gianna Francesca Catolico/rga
