Cebuano scout gets national award
A STUDENT of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu was chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines for 2011.
Vice President Jejomar C. Binay donned the medal on Niño Christopher Cardenas and nine other scouts at the Makati City Hall on Oct. 1.
The ten scouts were chosen from among the 25 national finalists. They were recognized for their community service, scholastic achievements and participation in scouting events. Their ability to live up to the scouting ideals, their observance of religious obligations and their performance in the interviews were also given weight by the selection committee.
The scouts won a medal, a trophy, cash and a two-year college scholarship sponsored by Coca Cola Philippines.
Niño has been an active boy scout since he was in first year high school. He is now an Eagle scout. He was recently awarded the Ave Maria Cross, a special award given to Catholic scouts.
As president of the SHS-AdC Student Council, Niño serves his fellow students through the programs and activities that he, along with his fellow officers, initiates and supports.
Article continues after this advertisementNiño is a consistent honor student since grade school, which proves that community service need not be a hindrance to academic excellence. He even finds time to pursue his hobby of photography and sports.
Article continues after this advertisementNiño said he is inspired to serve with compassion when he sees the example of those around him who serve—his family, friends, teachers and scout master.
Last year, Leslie Ryan Go, also of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu was also chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines.
