Fire razes at least 100 shanties, shops in Davao City market

DAVAO CITY – One person was injured while more than 100 shanties, small kiosks and establishments around Bangkerohan, the city’s main market, were razed by a fire that quickly developed into a third alarm situation on Friday afternoon.

Daisy Amol, 22 was hurt as she fled the fire that started at around 4:08 p.m., according to fire investigator Ramil Gillado of the Central Fire Station.

“The cause of the fire is still being investigated,” Gillado said.

But residents affected by the fire surmised that it may have been started by a faulty improvised cooking equipment that used a butane canister.

Maria Lourdes Rosauro, 56, a fruit vendor said all of her family’s belongings were charred in the fire.

“It quickly spread and we were not able to retrieve anything of value,” she said, expressing relief though that no family member was harmed.

“I don’t know how to start again. I lost my entire livelihood to the fire,” 29-year-old videoke joint owner Loremie Corporal said.

Damage brought by fire, which was subdued after a few hours, was initially estimated at P2.8 million, Gillado said. CDG
