Cop gunned down in Sorsogon
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—A policeman was shot and killed by three men in Matnog town in Sorsogon province on Tuesday, a report reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) Bicol regional office here on Wednesday said.
Insp. Mark Anthony Ferwelo, Matnog deputy police chief, said SPO1 Gems Jose Mortega, a team leader of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) in Matnog, died from bullet wounds in his head and body after he was attacked by three men at 6:30 p.m.
Police said Mortega was alighting from his motorcycle to visit a friend in Barangay (village) Sinibiran when he was shot.
Ferwelo said residents told investigators that they saw at least 10 people casing the house where Mortega was visiting in Barangay Sinibiran before he was attacked.
These people were also seen in nearby Barangay Tabunan.
Ferwelo said the attack was witnessed by the victim’s friend, Juliet Jijello, and her mother, Milagros.
