John Osmeña sticking with Binay despite friendship with Duterte

/ 02:59 PM April 02, 2016

TOLEDO CITY, Cebu—Mayor John Henry Osmeña has reiterated his commitment to Vice President Jejomar Binay even if Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is a close personal friend.

He said he planned to seek Duterte’s forgiveness when the two mayors meet at 3 p.m. on Saturday when the Davao mayor was scheduled to hold a rally in Toledo.

“Ako siyang ingnan na ‘Dong, pasayloa ko kay nahinayak na kog endorse kay Binay (I will tell him ‘Dong, please forgive me but I have already endorsed Binay),” he told a news conference in his office here on Saturday morning.

He added he would still endorse Binay even if he believed that Duterte would win in Toledo because Cebuanos considered the Davao mayor one of their own since he had roots in Cebu.

Still, Osmeña said he would include Binay in the sample ballots as his choice for president and Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo for vice president.

“The sample ballots are merely a suggestion. I cannot stop people who to vote for in the end,” he added.

He stressed that his commitment with Binay remained since he was not like some traditional politicians who, he said, were like “frogs” who would jump from one candidate to another.
