UP at par with top world universities in 4 subjects—2016 QS rankings

THE University of the Philippines (UP), the country’s national university, has made it to the 2016 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings in four subjects, four subjects less than what it has achieved last year.

The results of the survey released on Tuesday showed that UP featured in the 101-150 range in English, Language, and Literature; Agriculture and Forestry; and Modern Languages.

In the field of medicine, UP landed between the 301 to 400 range.

FEATURED STORIES

In 2015, UP was able to secure spots in eight subjects.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University were also able to land spots in the QS rankings.

Ateneo and La Salle both placed in the 150-200 range in English, Language, and Literature. In the field of education, La Salle was able to secure a place between the 201-300 range.

For 2016, QS noted that the Philippines is one of the 60 countries which have universities that provide “world-class education in one or more subjects.”

University of Hong Kong is the only Asian university which was able to secure a leading position in a subject in the rankings. UHK is the world’s leading university for dentistry, toppling Sweden’s Karolinska Institute.

The 2016 QS World University Subject Rankings features 42 disciplines, its largest ever. Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) both copped the leading positions in 12 subjects.

The six disciplines which were added in the 2016 rankings are: Anthropology, Archaeology, Performing Arts, Mineral Engineering, Nursing, and Social Policy and Administration.

It annually releases its rankings of the best universities around the world through its QS World University Rankings.
