4 dead, 3 missing in ComVal gold mine flooding

TAGUM CITY — Police said four people have been confirmed killed and three were still missing, as ofMonday, following a flooding inside a gold mine in Mt. Diwalwal, Monkayo, Compostela Valley on Sunday.

The dead included three mine workers and a villager who tried to save the 12 miners who have been trapped as rainwater flooded the Australia Tunnel at Purok 3 around 10:30 a.m., said Supt. Jay Dema-ala, Monkayo town police chief.

Dema-ala identified the fatalities as rescuer Ernesto Loquinia, and miners Gilbert Dayot, Reymart Pegaret and Reynante Gemino. Those pulled alive were Aljun Dumalaga, Oliver Uganap, Carlito Morado, Albert Agyang, Angelito Tanio and Pepe Mendoza.

Dema-ala said police and civilian rescuers have been using submersible pumps to drain the shaft of rainwater and look for miners Bryan and Richard Monson and Roel Dacaldacal.  SFM
