Cop shot dead in Laguna
SAN PEDRO CITY—A policeman was killed while his civilian companion is in critical condition after they were shot by still unidentified men in Calamba City in Laguna province on Friday afternoon, police said.
Police Officer 3 Arnold Saguirre, who was assigned at the Sta. Rosa City police station, died in the attack near a fastfood branch in Barangay Real in Calamba at 4 p.m., said Senior Supt. Ronnie Montejo, Laguna provincial police director.
Supt. Fernando Ortega, Calamba City police chief, in a separate telephone interview, said just before Saguirre and his companion were attacked, the victims were seen from a closed circuit television footage seemingly “waiting to meet someone.”
Ortega did not say whether the gunmen were also seen in the security camera footage.
They were also confirming if Saguirre was on duty at the time of the shooting.
“Initially, we are looking at (an illegal) drug angle here,” Ortega said without elaborating.
